Wes Dothard (Carrollton, Ga.), a sophomore linebacker for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team, grabbed his second-straight Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor today. He was joined on the weekly awards list by Mocs running back Marquis Green who was named the SoCon Freshman of the Week.
Dothard earns the defensive recognition in back-to-back weeks after leading the Mocs to a 23-14 win at Eastern Kentucky. He posted a career-best 10 tackles in the victory, including three tackles for loss and a sack. Dothard anchored the UTC defense which held EKU to just 2-of-16 on third downs and shut out its opponent in the second half for the second consecutive week.
Green came off the bench to finish with a game-high 68 yards rushing in place of Chris Awuah who left the game with an injury. The Palmetto, Fla., native's first career touchdown in the third quarter gave the Mocs a 17-14 lead they would not relinquish. Green also caught two passes for 11 yards in the win.
Elon receiver Aaron Mellette (offensive) and Appalachian State punter Sam Martin (special teams) were also honored by the SoCon for their performances on Saturday.
The Mocs have moved up to No. 13 in the mast recent Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top-25. Chattanooga takes its 2-1 record to No. 3 Appalachian State (2-1) on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3:30 p.m. (E.D.T.) for both teams SoCon opener.
