The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team will close out the 2013 regular season with a trip to Georgia Southern this weekend. The Mocs face the Eagles on Saturday, April 13, at Noon (E.D.T.) at the Hanner Tennis Complex in Statesboro, Ga.
UTC is currently 10-8 overall and 5-4 in the Southern Conference race. The Mocs are tied for No. 6 in the league standings, but could still finish anywhere from third to eighth based on this weekend's results. The top five teams in the league get a first round bye in next week's SoCon Tournament in Elon, N.C.
Georgia Southern is currently fifth in the SoCon at 5-3 and 9-7 overall. The Eagles host Samford on Friday before the Mocs come to town. A link for live scoring for the match is available on the men's tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.
The Mocs are 12-13 in the all-time series with Georgia Southern, but have won the last three matches. UTC scored a 6-1 victory in last year's meeting on March 11 in Chattanooga.
A victory against the Eagles would clinch back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2007 and 2008. It will also give the Mocs six wins in SoCon play for the first time since going 7-3 in 2002 and the first winning season in league matches since 2007.
Senior Manuel Barroetavena (Buenos Aires, Argentina) leads the team with a 21-9 overall record and a 14-4 mark in spring play. He is 7-2 in SoCon matches, playing mostly the No. 2 position. Senior Ankit Chopra (Chandigrah, India) also has a winning record in league play at 6-3. He is 10-6 in the spring and 15-10 overall.
Barroetavena and senior Jackson Tresnan (Apopka, Fla.) have become a formidable duo doubles play. They are 14-7 on the year, 12-3 in spring duals and 8-1 in SoCon matches.
