Year Two of the Huesman Era Kicks Off Saturday

Year Two of the Huesman Era Kicks Off Saturday

| By:

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is set to begin its 103rd season of college football on Saturday, Sept. 4, when No. 3 Appalachian State visits the Scenic City.  A huge crowd is expected at Finley Stadium for the 3:00 p.m. kickoff.

The game will broadcast live on SportSouth with Tom Werme providing the play-by-play and former NFL head coach Sam Wyche giving the color commentary.  SportSouth is a regional sports network that is available nationally on DirectTV and Dish Network.  Fans in the Chattanooga area can get the game on Comcast 53.  DirectTV subscribers can tune into channel 649 with Dish Network airing the game on 437.  EPB viewers in Chattanooga will find SportSouth on Channel 33.

Fans can also catch the game on the radio on the Mocs Sports Network.  The flagship station is ESPN Radio 105.1 FM in Chattanooga.  A live audio stream of the game is available on Chattanooga All Access on GoMocs.com.  Jim Reynolds is in his 31st year as the play-by-play man for the Mocs.  Todd Agne will again have the color commentary and Will Poindexter is back as the sideline reporter.

Chattanooga is coming off one of the biggest turnarounds in the NCAA last season.  After finishing 1-11 in 2008, first-year Head Coach Russ Huesman guided the Mocs to a 6-5 record in 2009 and the team's first winning season since 2005.  UTC finished 4-4 in the SoCon for the first time since 1998.  The Mocs' six wins last year equalled the total of wins over the previous three seasons - 1-11 in 2008; 2-9 in 2007; 3-8 in 2006.

QUICK NOTES TO KNOW ABOUT THE 2009 SEASON

  • First-year head coach Russ Huesman secured a winning record with a 6-5 mark and 4-4 in the Southern Conference. He has the most wins by a UTC first-year head coach since Bill Oliver went 8-3 in 1980. Coincidentally, Huesman was a junior DB on that 1980 squad. Harold Wilkes (9-1 in 1968) and Scrappy Moore (9-2 in 1931) each had nine wins in their first seasons at UTC.
  • Chattanooga went 4-1 at home, its best home record since moving to Finley Stadium in 1997.
  • The Mocs set or tied a number of school records this year, including the following:
    -
    Tied for Most All-SoCon Honorees - 8
    - Most Academic All-SoCon Honorees - 10
    -
Tied for Most SoCon Player of the Week Honors - 8
    - Most Season Tickets Sold - 2,527
    - Senior Josh Beard set a school record with 12 sacks
    - DE Josh Williams set a school freshman record with seven sacks
  • Senior DE Josh Beard led the nation and tied a single-season school record with 12.0 sacks on the year. He was the SoCon Defensive Player of the Year.
  • DE Josh Williams set a new UTC freshman record with seven sacks on the season. The true freshman was fourth in the SoCon and T-31st in the FCS in sacks on the year. His seven sacks also tied for No. 3 on the Mocs' single-season list.
  • Chattanooga totaled 30 sacks on the year, tying for second in the SoCon and 13th nationally.
  • The Mocs' defense held five of its 11 opponents to 20 points or less. It was the first time since 2000 UTC held five opponents to 20 points or less in a season.
  • Sophomore Jordan Tippit was second in the SoCon with five interceptions. He tied for 19th in the nation in that category. It was also the fifth most interceptions in a season in school history.
  • The Mocs were a very disciplined team in 2009 and were penalized an average of 38.6 yards per game. That number was second in the SoCon and the 11th lowest total in the nation.

QUICK NOTES TO KNOW ABOUT THE APPALACHIAN STATE GAME

  • Senior Captain Chis Harr will celebrate his 21st birthday on Saturday vs. Appalachian State. True freshman Keith Mayes will also turn 18 on Saturday.
  • UTC returns all five of its starting offensive linemen. That group did not allowed a sack in the last four games of 2009, a string of 176 pass plays. This included a matchup against FBS Champion Alabama in the season finale. Starting QB B.J. Coleman has not been sacked since the Georgia Southern game on Oct. 17. He went the final 213 pass plays of the year without being sacked.
  • Mocs' Head Coach Russ Huesman and Mountaineers' Head Coach Jerry Moore shared the SoCon Coach of the Year honors in 2009, according to the league's coaches. Huesman won the honor outright as voted by the SoCon media.
  • The Mocs open the season with a SoCon opponent for the first time in school history.
  • This is the first televised home game for UTC since hosting Carson-Newman in the season opener in 2007 that game was shown on Comcast Sports Southeast.
  • Chattanooga has lost five straight games to Appalachian State.
  • Senior OL T.J. Hurless has started the last 24 games of his career. His first start in that string was in 2007 against Appalachian State in the season finale.
  • The Mocs have six players on the preseason All-SoCon squads, as selected by the league's coaches...ASU has 13 representatives on the two teams.
  • The Mocs are picked to finish fifth in the SoCon by the league's coaches while ASU has been chosen to win its sixth-straight league title.
  • Chattanooga is receiving votes in the three major FCS polls. Appalachian State is No. 3 in each of those polls.

WHITEOUT - SEPT. 4 vs. APPALACHIAN STATE
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has declared the football home-opener against Appalachian State on Sept. 4 a WHITEOUT at Finley Stadium.  Look for the Mocs to don their white-on-white uniforms for what is building up to be the most anticipated season-opening football game in school history.  Fans are encouraged to wear white for the 3:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) showdown against the third-ranked Mountaineers.  The Mocs will also be giving away thousands of WHITEOUT T-shirts, thunderstix, pom-poms and other promotional items leading up to the game.

Business owners who promote the game by participating in the Marquee Mania will receive a FREE WHITEOUT T-shirt with their tickets.  State Farm, the official game sponsor, is handing out 1,000 FREE white Mocs T-shirts and the Tennessee Division of Forestry will be giving out 1,000 FREE white Mocs seat cushions in the First Tennessee Pavilion prior to the game.

ALL-TIME HOME OPENERS
The Chattanooga Mocs are 59-42-1 (.583)  in all-time season-opening games and 70-29-3 (.701) in home openers.  UTC has posted an 8-4 (.667) mark in the 12 home openers at FInley Stadium.  They were 62-21-3 (.738) in home openers in the 86 seasons played on Chamberlain Field.

MOCS NEARING SEASON TICKET SALES RECORD AGAIN IN 2010
The Chattanooga Mocs broke the all-time season ticket mark at Finley Stadium with 2,527 sold in 2009 and are threatening that mark again this year.  UTC is within 50 of the record at the beginning of game week leading up to the start of the season.  This is the fourth year UTC has topped the 2000-sold mark, including 2,003 in 1998 and 2,300 in 1997.

SIX MOCS TABBED PRESEASON ALL-SOCON
Senior offensive tackle Chris Harr and cornerback Buster Skrine highlight the six Mocs all-conference selections.  The duo are first team picks as the six UTC players ties for third most in the league with Elon, Furman and Wofford.  App State leads the way with 13 followed by Elon with seven.  Junior quarterback B.J. Coleman heads four second teamers for the Mocs, but he is the only one on offense.  Sophomore defensive end Josh Williams and junior linebacker Ryan Consiglio  are the defensive selections.  Junior punter Mike Hammons being tabbed on the second team gives the Mocs coverage in all three phases of the game on preseason squads.

CAPTAINS CHOSEN FOR 2010
Following the Spring Game, coach Huesman announced the captains for the 2010 season as voted on by the players.  Seniors Chris Harr and Buster Skrine and junior B.J. Coleman were chosen by their teammates to lead this year's team.

TOP-15 CROWDS AT FINLEY STADIUM
Tickets are selling fast for the Mocs home opener against Appalachian State.  This game could have one of the bigger crowds in the Mocs' history at Finley Stadium.  UTC's record crowd is 22,642 set against Tennessee State in the first game at Finley Stadium on Oct. 18, 1997.  The largest crowd to watch a football game at Finley is 23,010 when Appalachian State defeated Delaware 49-21 in the FCS National Championship game on Dec. 14, 2007.  Four of the Mocs' five home games in 2009 ranked in the top-15 crowds in Finley Stadium history, led by the 14,002 that attended the Glenville State game.  That was the third largest UTC crowd to date.

Below are the top-15 attended Moc games at Finley Stadium:

MOCS PICKED 4TH BY THE SOCON MEDIA AND 5TH BY THE LEAGUE'S COACHES IN THE PRESEASON
The Mocs are picked to finish fourth by the media and fifth by the leagues other eight coaches - a coach is not allowed to vote for his own team.  Appalachian State is the overwhelming favorite in both sets of ballots.  The Mountaineers received seven of a possible eight first-place votes on the coaches' side while garnering 22 of 30 on the media side.  Elon is the second-place selection with the remaining two coaches' votes and six of the eight left over media top picks.  Furman is third on both sides but that's where the polls begin to differ in opinion.  On the media side Chattanooga is fourth followed by Wofford, Samford (one first on the media side), Georgia Southern, Western Carolina and The Citadel.  The coaches target Samford fourth with UTC, Wofford, Georgia Southern, The Citadel and Western Carolina rounding out the field.

TOUGHER SCHEDULE IN 2010
As the Mocs are improving, so is their slate of non-conference opponents.  Chattanooga posted wins over Division II Glenville State and a winless FCS team in Presbyterian in 2009.  They traded those two games with Jacksonville State, ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation in the preseason, and Eastern Kentucky, picked to finish 3rd in the OVC in 2010.

ROSTER, DEPTH CHART AND BREAKDOWNS
A complete roster is located on pages 10-11 of the .pdf version of the game notes.  There is a roster breakdown on page 12 and a list of the starters and letterwinners returning and lost on page 13.  A two-deep chart can be found on pages 14-15.

IT'S ALL IN THE NAME
On first reference, it is acceptable to refer to us as the "University of Tennessee at Chattanooga".  After that, we prefer to be called "Chattanooga" or "UTC".  Our nickname is "Mocs".

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST APPALACHIAN STATE
The Mocs trail in the series against ASU 10-23, including losses in each of the last five meetings.  UTC's last win was a 59-56 shootout at Finley Stadium on Oct. 30, 2004.  Chattanooga only has two wins (2005 & 2000) in the last 21 games and is 7-9 at home.  The Mocs are 2-4 at home against the Mountaineers since moving to Finley Stadium in 1997.

RECEIVING VOTES
The Mocs are receiving votes in all three of the major FCS preseason polls.  They tallied 17 votes in the Sports Network Top-25, 15 votes in the AGS Top-25 and one vote in the FCS Coaches Poll.

SAESON OPENER VS. SOCON SCHOOL
The Mocs' season-opener against Appalachian State marks the first time UTC has started the season against a Southern Conference Opponent.  Chattanooga has opened against Samford five times in the last 15 years, most recently in 2003, but that was before the Bulldogs joined the SoCon.  The last time ASU opened against a SoCon foe was against Marshall in 1991.

SEASON NO. 103
The Chattanooga Mocs will begin the 103rd season of UTC football on Sept. 4, 2010, when they host Appalachian State at 3:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) at Finley Stadium.  The University of Chattanooga was founded in 1886 and football began play in 1904.  No teams were fielded in 1917 and 1918 due to World War I.  There was also a two-year hiatus from football action during World War II in 1943 and 1944.  The Mocs have an all-time record of 455-469-32 (.493) and have won 10 conference titles.

POSITION CHANGES
There are some notable players who are changing positions from the 2009 season, beginning with junior Joel Bradford's return to receiver.  The move reunites Bradford, who played defensive back in 2009, with high school teammate B.J. Coleman.  They were a formidable pair at Chattanooga's McCallie School during their prep careers and will look to get that same chemistry going again at UTC.  Junior J.D. Dothard will move up from free safety to linebacker, while junior Thomas Green goes from linebacker to fullback.

STARTERS/ LETTERWINNERS RETURNING/LOST
The Mocs return a total of 41 lettermen from the 2009 campaign. There are 25 coming back on the offensive side of the ball, while 14 return on defense. Two specialists will also return for the 2010 season. There are 18 starters returning, including nine on offense, seven on defense and two on special teams.

Included among the 25 offensive players returning is the entire offensive line.  Three of the five starters will be seniors in 2010, including right-tackle Chris Harr who was a second-team All-SoCon selection last season and a first team pick in the preseason this year.  Center Justin Galyon and right guard T.J. Hurless will also be seniors for the 2010 campaign.  Sophomore Adam Miller and junior Omre Harris round out the remaining starters who will be back on the offensive line.  This offensive line did not allow a sack over the last four games of the season.  They only allowed nine sacks all year, tying for first in the SoCon and third in the nation.

B.J. Coleman will be back at QB after starting all 11 games in 2009.  He loses a pair of starting receivers in Blue Cooper (Sr-4L) and Clint Woods (Sr-4L) who were both four-year lettermen for the Mocs.  However, a solid corps of wideouts return in Sloan Allison, Joel Bradford, Chris Marshall, Chris Pitchford, Brian Sutherland and Jeff Veres

The backfield will also be crowded with the return of Erroll Wynn, Chris Awuah and J.J. Jackson fighting for playing time at tailback.

The lone starter lost in the backfield is fullback Shaun Kermah (Sr-2L).  Starting tight end Garrett Hughes and his backup, Louis Gibson, both return in 2010.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Mocs return their starting secondary including first team All-SoCon honorees Buster Skrine and Jordan Tippit.  The Mocs secondary was 13th in the nation in passing defense, only allowing 158.9 yards per game.

The linebackers lose two starters and a valuable backup to graduationJoseph Thornton (Sr-4L), Steven Smigelsky (Sr-4L) and Doug Faatiliga (Sr-2L) are all gone from last year.  Ryan Consiglio is the lone starter returning among the linebackers and he is a preseason Second Team All-SoCon pick.

The defensive line was also hit hard by graduation.  2009 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Josh Beard (Sr-2L) finished his career along with B.J. Taylor (Sr-2L).  Senior Jaron Norfleet, juniors Nick Craig and La'Nard Carr and second team All-SoCon honoree Josh Williams, now a sophomore, return to the defensive line.

Special teams will have to replace the All-American toe of kicker Craig Camay (Sr-4L) who finished his eligibility last season.  Junior Mike Hammons returns to handle the punting duties while fellow junior Brock Oliver returns as the deep snapper.

NEW FACES EXPECTED TO MAKE AN IMPACT
The Mocs have 16 redshirt freshmen, true freshmen and transfers currently listed on the depth chart.  Of that group, true freshman kicker Nick Pollard could have the quickest impact, depending on the coin toss vs. ASU.  The 2009 Tennessee Mr. Football Kicker of the Year will handle the place-kicking duties this season.

On the offensive side of the ball, redshirt freshman Marlon Anthony looks to make an impact at receiver.  At 6-6 and 205 pounds, he makes a big target for QB B.J. Coleman.  True freshman RB Keon Williams was impressive in fall camp until an injury slowed his progress, but he could still see some time in the backfield.  South Carolina transfer Jarrett Burns came to UTC as a DB, but is working his way up the receiving ranks.  His 6-2 frame is another big body for Coleman.

UAB transfer Nick Davison and Tennessee transfer Chris Donald are both tabbed as starters on the defensive line.  They have both been impressive throughout camp should be leaders on the defensive unit.  Redshirt freshman Kadeem Wise is a starting corner and leads a number of fresh legs who are dying to see action in the secondary.  True freshman Chaz Moore is another DB who will have an impact in his first season.

B.J. COLEMAN IS LIVING UP TO THE HYPE
Junior QB B.J. Coleman created quite a stir in the Scenic City when he announced his decision to transfer from Tennessee to Chattanooga in the summer of 2009.  The former high school standout at McCallie in Chattanooga was fourth in the SoCon in total offense (210.8/game) and third in passing yards (213.5/game).  His numbers are even more impressive when you consider he had thrown a total of eight competitive passes the previous two seasons.  His teammates have shown confidence in him by naming him one of three team captains and the league's coaches have pegged him a preseason Second Team All-SoCon selection in 2010.

  • 2,348 passing yards on the season...31st in the nation
  • 7th Moc to throw for 2,000+ yards in a season
  • 1st to throw for 2,000 yards since 2004...No. 4 on the Mocs' single-season list
  • Eight 200-yard passing games is No. 6 on the Mocs' career list
  • 17 TDs tied with Steve Woods (1980) for No. 7 on the Mocs' single-season list.
  • 39-61 for 356 yards and three TDs against The Citadel...2 comps shy of the school record and the most by anyone in the SoCon in 2009...5 attempts shy of the school record and the most by anyone in the SoCon in 2009...Most yards by a Moc since 2004

O-LINE DID NOT ALLOW A SACK IN THE LAST FOUR GAMES OF 2009
The Mocs' offensive line allowed only nine sacks on the season, the second fewest in the SoCon and tied for 4th fewest in the nation.  Chattanooga returns all five starters to the offensive line, led by seniors Chris Harr, T.J. Hurless and Justin Galyon.  UTC has not allowed a sack in the last four games, a string of 176 pass plays.  That included a matchup against FBS Champion Alabama in the season finale.  Starting QB B.J. Coleman has not been sacked since the Georgia Southern game on Oct. 17.  He went the final 213 pass plays of the year without being sacked.

FOUR ALL-SOCON SELECTIONS RETURN IN 2010
Of the eight Mocs who made the All-SoCon team in 2009, four will return next season.  Defensive backs Buster Skrine and Jordan Tippit were both first team selections while offensive lineman Chris Harr and defensive lineman Josh Williams were on the second team.

MOCS RACKED UP SACKS IN 2009
As a team, the Mocs totaled 30 sacks in 2009, ranking second in the SoCon and 13th in the nation.  It was the fourth highest total in school history and the most since 1985.  Chattanooga's other high sack totals included 38 in 1985 and 1977 and 31 in 1983.

CRAIG IS BIG IN BIG GAMES
Junior Nick Craig twice hit his career-high with six tackles in 2009.  He did it against the two best teams on the Mocs schedule last season, Appalachian State and Alabama.  He also added a sack in the game against the Crimson Tide.

CEREBRAL BUNCH
The offensive line has a lot of academic honors among its ranks.  Sophomores Adam Miller, Dustin Tate and Austin Wilson were all on the 2009 Academic All-SoCon team.  Freshmen Irvin Hernandez and Steven Nease, sophomore Will Hewitt, senior T.J. Hurless and Miller made the Dean's List and were joined by senior Chris Harr, Tate and Wilson on the Athletics Director's Honor Roll.  Nease owns the highest g.p.a. on the team with a perfect 4.0.

HUESMAN, EHRENFELD ARE FORMER TEAMMATES OF THREE MOCS DADS
Head coach Russ Huesman and assistant coach Russ Ehrenfeld are both former Mocs football players.  Huesman played from 1978-81 while Ehrenfeld was a Moc from 1977-80.  Both of the Mocs coaches were teammates of Bryon Coleman (1977-80), who is the father of sophomore QB B.J. Coleman, Tim Dockery (1981-83), who is the father of freshman OL Hunter Dockery, and Mike Nease (1980-83), who is the father of freshman OL Steven NeaseNick Davison's father, Mark, was also a classmate of Huesman and Ehrenfeld at UTC, but he did not play football.

MAJORITY OF THE MOCS ARE FROM TENNESSEE AND GEORGIA
Of the 87 members currently on the Mocs' roster, 78 list Tennessee (53) or Georgia (25) as their home state.  That means 89% of the roster is from Tennessee or Georgia, including 60% from Tennessee and 40% from Georgia. Three Mocs are from Florida and Alabama.  There is one representative each from California, North  Carolina and Virginia.

ASSISTANT COACHES WITH CHATTANOOGA TIES
Chattanooga head coach Russ Huesman has put together an impressive group of assistant coaches for the 2010 season.  Not only are the assistants very experienced college football coaches, but many of them posses ties to UTC and Chattanooga.  A UTC letterman himself, Huesman brought in former lettermen Russ Ehrenfeld (1977-80) and Tony Coode (1998-00) last season.  This year, former Mocs Geep Wade (1999-01) and Jimmy Lindsey (1996-99) also join the staff.  Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield was a graduate assistant at UTC from 1999-00 and the receivers coach in 2001.  Offensive assistant Will Healy is a Chattanooga native and all-state quarterback at Boyd-Buchanan High School.

HUESMAN'S CONNECTION TO THE SUPER BOWL CHAMPION SAINTS
UTC head coach Russ Huesman has strong ties to the 2010 Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints.  During his time at William & Mary, he recruited and coached Saints safety Darren Sharper.  A two-time All-American for the Tribe, Sharper was the Yankee Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.  Also on that squad were Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and Philadelphia Eagles Defensive Coordinator Sean McDermott.

SCRAPPY MOORE FIELD RECEIVES MAKEOVER
Thanks in large part to a donation from Renee Haugerud and John Murphy, the Mocs' practice facility, Scrappy Moore Field, has received a much-needed makeover.  Located on the banks of the Tennessee River and the RiverWalk, Scrappy Moore Field now has new artificial turf on half of its playing surface.  Murphy is a former member of the Mocs' football team from 1977-1980.  He was the long-snapper on three Southern Conference championship squads during his career at UTC.  He was also a teammate of current head coach Russ Huesman and assistant coach Russ Ehrenfeld.    The facility is now known as the Murphy-Haugerud Football Practice Complex at Scrappy Moore Field.

MOCS IN THE NFL
There are two former Mocs who are currently listed on an NFL roster.  Eldra Buckley (2005-06) saw action in 16 games for Philadelphia last season and is back with the Eagles in 2010.  Terrell Owens (1992-96) recently signed with the Cincinnati Bengals for his 15th year in the league.  Terdell Sands (1999) was picked up by the New England Patriots for the 2009 season, but is currently not on a roster.  Blue Cooper (2006-09) was a rookie and in training camp with the Eagles, but was recently released.

UTC ENROLLMENT PASSES 10,000 FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2009-10
UTC enrollment reached a major milestone during the 2009-10 academic year with 10,526 students-more than a 7 percent increase over last fall.  This growth continues a five-year trend of record enrollment for the campus.  Freshman enrollment-at 2,209-reached a record number, as did Graduate School enrollment.  Once again, UTC was ranked in the top tier of the Top Public Master's Universities in the South in the U.S. News & World Report 2010 America's Best Colleges, placing it in the top tier of Southern universities.  Enrollment is expected increased again in 2010-11, but the final numbers are not yet official.

MOCS TIE SCHOOL RECORD WITH EIGHT ON THE 2009 ALL-SOCON TEAM
Between the SoCon media and coaches all-conference teams, eight Mocs were honored for their play in 2009, tying the school record since joining the SoCon in 1977 for all-conference recognition in a single season.  UTC also had eight honorees on the 1979 squad.  Senior DE Josh Beard and senior PK Craig Camay were first-team players on both the coaches and media squads.  Senior WR Blue Cooper and junior OL Chris Harr were on the second team according to both the media and coaches.  Sophomore DB Jordan Tippit was a first-team media selection while junior DB Buster Skrine was a first team selection by the coaches.  Skrine was also a second team selection by the league's media, along with freshman DE Joshua Williams.  Senior LB Joseph Thornton made the coaches second team.

LOSING STREAKS END IN 2009
The Mocs snapped a 10-game losing streak with their win over Glenville State on Sept. 3.  They also ended a 17-game losing streak against Division I opponents with their 29-13 win against Presbyterian.  Chattanooga had lost nine straight road games overall before defeating Presbyterian.  UTC also won its first non-conference game against a Division I opponent since a 31-7 victory at Tennessee Tech, on Aug. 31, 2006, with the PC win.  The Wofford win snapped a 13-game SoCon losing streak.  The Samford win stopped a six-game SoCon road losing streak.  Chattanooga also stopped a three-game slide against The Citadel.

SCHOOL-RECORD 10 MOCS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-SOCON HONORS LAST SEASON
The Mocs put 10 student-athletes on the 2009 Fall Academic All-SoCon team, shattering the previous high of four in the 2007 season.  Included on the team were senior Steven Smigelsky, sophomores Joel Bradford, Nick Craig, Ryan Geist, Mike Hammons and Brock Oliver and redshirt freshmen Adam Miller, Dustin Tate, Jeff Veres and Austin Wilson.  To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the fall campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

MORE MOCS HONORED FOR THEIR WORK IN THE CLASSROOM IN 2009
A total of 36 members of the UTC football program were honored for being named to the Athletics Director's Honor for having a 3.0+ grade-point-average for the fall semester.  A group of 21, including made the Dean's List for having a 3.2+ g.p.a.

MOCS POST IMPRESSIVE ATTENDANCE JUMP
Mocs fans spun the turnstiles at Finley Stadium at a near-record pace in 2009.  UTC had the third largest crowd at Finley Stadium against Glenville State (14,002) and the fifth highest attendance against Furman (11,201).  UTC finished the year No. 34 in total attendance (52,515) and No. 31 in average attendance (10,503) in the FCS.  Chattanooga averaged 10,000+ for a full season for the first time since moving to Finley Stadium in 1997.
