PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team opened its season Monday tying for second at the Labor Day Shootout at the TPC at Sawgrass Stadium Course, home to the PGA Tour Tournament Players Championship. The event was shortened to 27 holes due to darkness.
Coastal Carolina won the event at 464 followed by Chattanooga and Florida, eight strokes back at 472. UCF (479) was fourth followed by Jacksonville (517) and USC Upstate (537).
Junior Maria Juliana Loza led three Mocs in the top 10 finishing second at five-over par 113. Seniors Christine Wolf (115) and Emma de Groot (117) finished tied for fourth and seventh, respectively.
Chattanooga was in third place after 18 holes behind strong play from Loza and de Groot. Loza stood in fifth at four-over par 76, while de Groot was a shot back at 77 (+5), tied for sixth.
Over the final nine holes, the Mocs made up eight shots on Florida to tie for second. Loza (+1) and Wolf (E) paced UTC as its 156 was second only to UCF (155) for the final nine.
True freshmen Yushira Budhram and Jordan Britt rounded out the Mocs' scoring. Budhram shot 127, while Britt ended up at 132.
Coastal Carolina's Courtney Boe won medalist honors at 111 (+3), two strokes clear of Loza. JU's Kristen Boettcher ended up third at 114, one shot ahead of Wolf and Jessica Alexander (CCU) in fourth.
The Mocs return to the course Sept. 26-28 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. This year's event is in Vail, Colo., on the Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club.
