Porky's Open Tops the Million Dollar Mark

Porky's Open Tops the Million Dollar Mark

| By:

The Porky's Open Golf Tournament, the largest single-day fundraiser for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Athletics Department, has raised over $1 million for athletic scholarships in its 12-year run.  This year's event took place on May 10 and featured a full slate of 33 teams at Council Fire Golf Club.

"The Porky's Open is without a doubt our biggest fundraiser of the year," stated Director of Athletics Rick Hart.  "Thanks to the leadership of the UTC Mocs Club and Frank Kinser, this event provides a tremendous amount of support to our program.  It is also a great opportunity for our coaches, administrators and student-athletes to mix with our boosters and supporters in a relaxed environment."

Originally scheduled for May 3, the tournament was rained out on its first attempt.  Participants returned to Council Fire this week for a spirited afternoon with the Mocs.  A number of coaches and student-athletes were on hand to work the event and add to the atmosphere of the afternoon.

Basketball coaches Wes Moore and John Shulman took up their normal spots on the par-3 seventh hole.  The comedic duo spent the afternoon trading jabs and firing nine-irons at the flag for each group that came through.  Their Abbott & Costello-like performance has become so legendary that two local TV stations came out to film some of their best work.  You can see those stories in the links at the top of the page.

Football coach Russ Huesman took his job a little more serious, putting for participants on the par-4 ninth hole.  Members of the Southern Conference Champion women's golf team were hitting tee shots on the par-5s while the volleyball team held a putting contest on the practice green at the turn.

Local professional angler and a member of the Mocs Anglers Bass Classic Tournament Committee, Brent Brady, conducted a casting contest on No. 6 to promote the June 18 event.  There was also a silent auction with some items still up for bid on GoMocs.com.

All totaled, the tournament was a tremendous success in both money raised and time spent with the donors, supporters and participants.  Below is a list of winners from each flight and be sure to check out the links to the photo gallery and the articles in the local media about the Porky's Open at the top of the page.
