CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at
Chattanooga softball team was selected to be a No. 2 seed, the highest in
program history, at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional with Alabama earning the No. 2
overall seed. The Lady Mocs gathered at Taco Mac for the selection show on
Sunday night, but it was no surprise to be sent to Alabama, which was the last
regional announced.
"We are excited and have played at Alabama a lot over the
past five years," said head coach Frank Reed. "We are familiar with the stadium there. This is the highest seed in
program history and the team is well deserving of that. We are going to play
another Tennessee team in Memphis, who had a great season."
The Lady Mocs open the regional on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against
No. 3 Memphis (35-12), while No. 1 Alabama (46-8) and No. 4 Jackson State (24-19) follow at 7 p.m.
Further information on a full bracket for the Tuscaloosa Regional will be
available on GoMocs.com on Monday.
"We are a very well deserving for a two seed," said senior outfielder Lyndsey Stiles (Hixson, Tenn.). "I was just
hoping to go somewhere other than Tuscaloosa. The reasoning is to have an
opportunity to play somewhere else, but we know that field. We have played there and I
think that is an advantage for us."
This is the fifth time in eight NCAA Tournament appearances
that the Lady Mocs are headed to Tuscaloosa, Ala. Six of current players - Tiffany Baker, Lauren Flores, Michelle Fuzzard, Kandice Irwin, Della Harrison and Lyndsey Stiles - will be taking the field in their third regional at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Chattanooga captured the
Southern Conference Tournament title on Saturday with an 11-2 victory after
five innings against College of Charleston at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga. The
Lady Mocs have earned the league's automatic bid for the eighth time in 12
years.
The NCAA tournament is a 64-team event broken up into 16
regions of four. The selection committee tries to keep teams within their
respective region. The winner of each double-elimination region advances to the
Super Regionals, a best-of-three series against another opponent, for the right
to advance to the Women's College World Series.
The Lady Mocs have been sent to Tuscaloosa, Ala. four times
in 2001, 2003, 2008 and 2009. Other destinations for Chattanooga have been
Seattle (2000), Tallahassee (2002) and Athens (2004). The Lady Mocs advanced to
within one victory in 2002 from going to the Women's College World Sereis after
beating No. 1-seeded Florida Atlantic twice.
Tickets to the regional can be purchased through the host
school, Alabama, with more information to come on Monday on GoMocs.com, the
official website Chattanooga Athletics.
