With the 2012 spring semester just getting underway, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Athletics Department released its semester grades for the fall of 2011 today. For the fifth-straight term, over half of the Mocs posted a 3.0 grade-point-average and over 100 made the Dean's List.
"Our student-athletes do an outstanding job in the classroom, in competition and in the community," stated UTC Director of Athletics Rick Hart. "They understand our vision of establishing comprehensive excellence as the UTC standard and strive to excel, academically, athletically and socially.
A total of 146 Mocs, 51.2% of all student-athletes at UTC, made the Athletics Director's Honor Roll for having a 3.0 semester g.p.a. Chattanooga also put 112 (38.4%) on the Dean's List with a 3.2 or higher g.p.a.
The Mocs had increased their overall g.p.a. in each of the previous six semesters, but came up just short of the school-record 2.97 set in the spring of 2011 with a 2.92 in the fall. It is still the third highest g.p.a. on record and gives UTC a 2.90 mark or greater in each of the last three terms.
"Our ultimate goal is to reach and maintain the 3.0 mark across the board," added Hart. "Our Athletic Student Support Services continues to examine and develop the best practices for helping our student-athletes be successful in the classroom. I know we are going to reach this goal and I expect to get there in the very near future."
There were a total of eight teams with a 3.0 for the semester, including men's cross country (3.67), women's cross country (3.62), women's golf (3.53), women's tennis (3.40), men's track & field (3.36), women's track & field (3.33), volleyball (3.32) and soccer (3.26).
Individually, there were 28 student-athletes with a 4.0 in the fall. Some notables among this group were All-Southern Conference performers Chris Berry (cross country), Joel Bradford (football), Mark Cole (cross country) and Becca Smith (soccer). Berry also competed well into the postseason, earning All-Region honors and running at the NCAA National Championships.
Junior Kayla Christopher (women's basketball) and freshman Nick Soto (wrestling) also had 4.0s in the fall. Christopher is a starter for the Lady Mocs who are off to a 5-0 mark in SoCon action. Soto is currently 14-4 on the mat and ranked No. 14 in the nation at 133.
