The Mocs kick off the year with a trip to Big East foe South Florida on Sept. 1. This will be UTC's second game against a team from the Big East Conference, having also visited West Virginia in 2002. Not only will Tampa, Fla., welcome the Mocs the first Saturday in September, it is also hosting the 2012 Republican National Convention on Aug. 27-30. Mocs fans wanting to make the trip should make plans now before destinations fill up for the weekend.
Chattanooga stays on the road in week two with a visit to Jacksonville State. The Mocs defeated the 10th-ranked Gamecocks 38-17 at home last season and hold a 26-10 advantage in the series that dates back to 1904.
The home-opener will be Thursday, Sept. 13 against NCAA Division II Glenville State. Mocs fans remember the Pioneers as the first game of the Russ Huesman era on Sept. 3, 2009. UTC won that contest 30-13 in Coach Huesman's debut.
Glenville State is a last-minute replacement for Presbyterian College who opted out of the home game that was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15. Thursday night games have always been popular in the Scenic City, with an average attendance that is 30% higher than a Saturday crowd at Finley Stadium. Therefore, Chattanooga decided to move the game with the Pioneers up two days to draw another large crowd to Finley Stadium.
The Mocs open the Southern Conference portion of their schedule with Homecoming against Appalachian State on Sept. 22. The Mocs and Mountaineers have put on a show in each of the last three meetings. ASU has won all three but none have been decided until the fourth quarter. The difference in the last two games has been a total of three points.
A trip to The Citadel on Sept. 29 is followed by the open date on Oct. 6. UTC stays on the road on Oct. 13, visiting Furman. Chattanooga broke a 15-year losing streak to the Paladins on its last venture to Greenville, S.C., in 2010.
The Mocs are back at home for consecutive weeks, beginning with Samford on Oct. 20 and Georgia Southern the following week. UTC hits the road for two of its last three games, including a Nov. 3 contest at Western Carolina. The final road game of the season is at Wofford on Nov. 10. UTC wraps up the 2012 regular season at home against Elon on Nov. 17.
