Mocs Compete in First Scrimmage of the Spring
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team took part in its first scrimmage of spring practice today.  The Mocs went through a 94-play afternoon at Finley Stadium

As expected, the defense dominated early, forcing three-and-outs on the first three possessions.  The Mocs return eight starters to the No. 1 ranked defense in the Southern Conference.

The offense is moving from the pro-style attack used over the last three years to a spread approach that better suits the top two candidates for the starting quarterback job.  Terrell Robinson and Jacob Huesman are battling for the No. 1 position and both shook off rough early starts to finish strong.

"I thought Terrell really made a couple of nice runs," stated head coach Russ Huesman.  "He did a nice job and managed the offense really well.  I thought Jacob had some nice runs and I thought he had some good balls out there too."

Robinson broke off the longest run of the day late in the scrimmage.  He took a snap to the right side for a 40-yard score.  He finished with a team-high 81 yards and the one score on 15 carries.  He was also 9-15 passing for 46 yards.

Defensive back Don Cope picked off Robinson early in the scrimmage, but Terrell rebounded later with an 11-yard TD pass to tight end Troy Dye on third-and-long.

Huesman scored a pair of rushing touchdowns on the day.  The first came after Robinson orchestrated a 58-yard drive down to the two, but lost his helmet trying to score.  Huesman came in and barreled through the left side for the score.

Huesman last scored on a nine-yard run.  He finished the day with 37 rushing yards on nine carries.  He was 8-21 for 77 yards through the air, including an 18-yard TD pass to Ron Moore over the middle.  He was picked off once in the redzone by linebacker Shane Heatherly.

Taylor Stanford led all receivers with three catches for 23 yards.  Marquis Green led the running backs with six carries for 27 yards.  "We know we have a pretty good defense, so I was pleased with how the offense responded after a rough start," added Huesman.  "We just have to block a little bit better, we have to run a little bit better and we have to throw and catch a little bit better."

The Mocs will take the next 11 days off for spring break.  UTC will be back on the practice field on Monday, March 19, at 3:30 p.m. (E.S.T.).  The annual Spring Game is set for March 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Finley Stadium.

"I think this break will give our coaching staff a chance to regroup, really look at things and figure out where we need to go now," said Huesman.  "This break is going to help us offensively more than anything.  We are banged up a little bit.  Hopefully we can get some guys back with about a week and a half off.  They probably need a little bit of a break."
