EATONTON, Ga. --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team finished third as senior Stephan Jaeger (Munich, Germany) shot up the leaderboard Sunday at the Linger Longer Invitational on Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation. Jaeger fired a final round 68 (-4) to move from a tie for 11th to sole possession of third, two shots off the lead.
Jaeger had five birdies and a single bogey on his card. He birdied three, six, eight, 13 and 18 to offset a bogey on 17. It's his fifth round this season with one or fewer bogeys.
"Nothing he does surprises me," head coach Mark Guhne said about his Ben Hogan Award candidate. "It's a pretty simple recipe. He combines great talent with an unbelievable work ethic and then manages his way around 18 holes in a way that matches his ability and heart."
Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) tied for 16th at level par 216 after today's 73. Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) tied for 23rd at three-over par, 219.
Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) and Benni Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria) rounded out the team scoring. Johnston shot 225, while Weilguni ended up at 240. Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) played as an individual shooting 227.
No. 7 Alabama ran away with the team title with a 26-under par total of 838. The Crimson Tide shot 274 (-14) to pull away from No. 25 Georgia and the Mocs. The Bulldogs wound up at minus 12 (852) in finishing second.
The Tide's Cory Whitsett defended his medalist honor from last year at eight under, albeit in a playoff. It took four holes for Whitsett and UGa's Nick Reach to settle the crown. Whitsett shot 64 (-8) today to earn his way to the win.
Chattanooga is back on the tee this Saturday at the LSU Invitational at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La. Jaeger is defending medalist while UTC looks to improve on its second-place finish a year ago. Live scoring can be accessed via GoMocs.com on the men's golf schedule page.
