CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Chattanooga Lady Mocs Head Coach Frank Reed announced on Sunday that volunteer assistant Lindsey Ubrun would be promoted to the role of assistant coach, while Michelle Fuzzard after finishing her
stellar five-year playing career in May will take on the role of volunteer assistant.
"With the departure of Assistant Coach Sammi Parks, I am excited
to announce the completion of our 2013 coaching staff with Assistant Coach
Lindsey Ubrun and Volunteer Assistant Michelle Fuzzard," said Coach
Reed. "After being with us for two years working with our hitters and outfielders,
coach Uburn has done a great job and the program is excited about keeping her
on staff. We definitely wanted to be able to keep a player with the distinction
of Fuzzard as a part of our program. She is going to work with the pitchers
and catchers. With her ability, she can also spread out and work with hitters
and in the infield."
Chattanooga has a coaching staff of four that includes the five-time
SoCon Coach of the Year Reed, associate head coach Amy Herrington-Woodard,
assistant coach Ubrun and volunteer assistant Fuzzard.
The Lady Mocs have posted two of the most prolific offensive
seasons in school history as the team finished near the top of the nation in
batting average with a .342 clip in 2011 and .347 rate in 2012. Coach Ubrun has
been a big part of that success in providing one-on-one training with each
student-athlete.
"It is real important for me to be able to reward Coach
Ubrun for her hard work," said Coach Reed. "She has the passion for coaching
and teaching, which has been a part of our success over the past two years. The
individual student-athletes know that they can go to her, and she is going to
help them."
Chattanooga set seven single-season offensive records in
2011 that saw the program earn a runner-up finish at the NCAA Tuscaloosa
Regional. Over the past two years, the Lady Mocs have eclipsed a total of eight offensive records including home runs (66), doubles (105), RBI (368), runs scored (391),
total bases (842), hit by pitch (48), slugging pct. (.563) and on-base pct.
(.423).
"It is really
exciting and a great opportunity to continue coaching with a program, coaching staff
and school that I love," said Coach Ubrun. "This has been a great program to be
a part of. It is nice that I can stay and start working in the office to learn all
the little things that are constantly being done behind the scenes."
Ubrun came to Chattanooga after a successful collegiate career
compiling a .313 average with 48 home runs and 164 RBI at Missouri and
Maryland. She was a 2009 NFCA All-American (second team) and ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA
All-American (third team) as the Tigers advanced to the Women's College World
Series.
The Riverside, Calif., native was additionally a two-time
All-Big 12 First Team honoree after transferring as a junior from Maryland.
Ubrun earned All-ACC Second Team recognition as a member of the Terapins.
She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Missouri in May 2010 with
a Bachelor of Science in Education.
Following her tremendous career at Chattanooga, Fuzzard
rounds out Coach Reed's staff by serving as pitching coach, but will also assist
the hitters and infield. She is the Lady Mocs and Southern Conference career
leader in RBI at 217 and total bases 453, while setting the single-season RBI
mark for the conference with 75 in 2011.
"It is an honor to have Coach Reed provide me with this opportunity,"
said Fuzzard. "He thinks very highly of my abilities as a pitcher and
hitter and has enabled me to continue my career here at Chattanooga. I was not
ready to give up wearing Chattanooga on my chest. It feels really good to be
able to do that next year as I finish up my master's degree."
The Chattanooga slugger finished her career inside the top
five in every individual offensive category in school history. She ended her
career with a .371 average scoring 151 times with 267 hits and 43 home runs
Fuzzard was a dual-threat as a pitcher posting a 47-23 mark
and 3.23 ERA with 319 strikeouts and 444.1 innings of work. She etched herself in
the school's top 10 in a number of pitching statistics including wins,
strikeouts and innings.
Looking back on her career, the changing moment was an ACL injury that occurred during the 2010 season, which forced her to redshirt. During
that time, she sat in the dugout with Coach Reed and charted pitches, therefore, gaining
valuable insight into the college game.
"She understands my philosophy after sitting on the bench
for a year after her knee injury," said Coach Reed. "She understands what we
are trying to accomplish with our pitches because she has been there and knows my
philosophies on how I pitch people and why I do things. She was really
important in helping Taylor [Deason] come on as a freshman last year. With the
two new freshmen coming in, I think she is going to do a great job mentoring them."
The four-time All-SoCon First Team performer became the
league's first back-to-back Player of the Year since 1998. She was later named
the 2012 SoCon Female Athlete of the Year.
The Huntington Beach, Calif., native became the first player
in conference history to be named to the All-SoCon First (1B) and Second (P) teams at two different defensive positions.
Fuzzard graduated in August 2011 with a Bachelor's of
Science in Criminal Justice and is currently seeking her master's degree in the
same field.
With the Lady Mocs coaching staff in place, Chattanooga
returns to campus to being preparations for the 2013 season in August. The team
will also welcome six newcomers to the Scenic City.
