CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga Mocs rising senior
Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) shot his second straight 71 for an even-par
142 to qualify for match play at the United States Amateur Public Links at
Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah. Fox tied for 20th in medal play falling
inside the magic top 64 number.
Incoming freshman Kory Webb (Knoxville, Tenn.) just
missed the cut at plus six, 148. Webb's seven-footer for par on his final hole,
the ninth, just missed to cap today's 75 (+4). Despite falling short, his
performance winning his qualifier and pushing for match play bodes well for his
future with the Mocs.
"Fox is a contender," said head coach Mark Guhne. "When
you get to match play, everyone is dangerous, but he is tough to play. Not only
is he talented, but his luck is uncanny. Our guys call it getting 'Foxed'.
"I'm disappointed for Kory," Guhne continued. "But his
play this summer should be building his confidence."
Fox was plus two on his round with three holes to play.
He birdied 16 and 18 to get back to even. Webb got off to a rough start and
needed birdie on his 18th hole to solidify his chances to advance. It was not
meant to be as his aforementioned par put slid by to put him tied for 77th.
Fox starts match play Wednesday. There are six rounds to
be played over four days culminating with a 36-hole final on Saturday. Scores and
pairings can be found at the USGA's website: http://www.usga.org/ChampEventSite.aspx?id=17179869204.
