CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. --- Chattanooga Mocs senior Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) claimed two wins Thursday to move into the quarterfinals at the United States Amateur. He won 1up and 2up at storied Cherry Hills Country Club but did it in different fashions.

Fox led or was square in his first 30 holes today but trailed 1down with five to play in his Round of 16 matchup with Zach Munroe, who transferred to College of Charleston this summer from North Carolina. Munroe won holes 12 and 13 with pars to take a one-hole lead and held it heading into 15.

Munroe's putter let him down. While Fox struggled with a bogey on the par three, Munroe had a shortish par putt to win the hole. It slid by and then he was too strong with the bogey effort to drop the hole and square it with three to play.

The duo halved 16 leading into the pivotal par five 17th. Both laid up with their second shots and were on the green in regulation. Fox left his 10-foot birdie putt just short making par.

Munroe followed by running his birdie attempt past the hole leaving a ticklish four footer coming back. That slid by to send Fox to the 18th back in the lead by a hole.

Both found the fairway off the tee and in a nice moment of sportsmanship, Fox helped Munroe spot the hole location on the uphill par four. Munroe flew the green, while Fox landed on the front left. Two chips later and Munroe conceded the hole and match to Fox, 2up.

Fox opened his day with a 1up win over Dr. Douglas Hanzel. He never trailed in the tight match with the Savannah, Ga., native.

Fox led four different times winning six holes total over 18 holes. It started with a 1up lead with a par on two. Hanzel leveled it with a birdie on four before a par on five pushed Fox back up by a hole.

Hanzel answered winning at six to even it once again. Fox took control starting at seven.

He birdied the par four and then moved to 2up with a birdie on the par four ninth. Hanzel won 10 with a par but another Fox birdie gave him a 2up lead at 13.

The duo halved the 14th giving Fox a two-hole advantage with four to play. The veteran amateur still had a trick up his sleeve for the Mocs senior. Hanzel captured the 15th and 16th with pars to square the match with two to play.

Both men halved the 17th building the drama. Neither played the 18th hole particularly well as Fox's bogey was good enough to send him into the Round of 16.

Fox now faces world No. 1 Chris Williams of Washington. The two play at 11 a.m., Eastern Time. The semifinals are Saturday with the 36-hole final slated for Sunday.
