Volleyball Drops Saturday Match to WCU

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team (7-10, 1-1 SoCon) fell 3-1 Saturday afternoon to Western Carolina (5-12, 1-1 SoCon) at Maclellan Gym.

Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) paced the Chattanooga attack with 16 kills, while Julimar Alvarado (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added 10. Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) had 34 digs, as Bridget Camacho (Cumming, Ga.) added 46 assists, both match highs.

Jordan Timmerman led all players with 20 kills pacing three in double digits for the Catamounts. Caitlin Piechota had 13, while Nicole Ford notched 10.

WCU jumped out of the gate early with a seven-point victory in the first frame. The Catamounts tallied 12 kills during the set while only allowing Chattanooga only six.

The Mocs forced the second stanza into extra points and took the decision 27-25. With each team keeping the score within three points the entire match. Down 25-24, UTC recorded three straight points, four of the last five, behind a Kasey Talley kill and back-to-back WCU attack errors.

Tied 1-1 at the intermission, the Mocs were unable to carry momentum into the third and fourth frames.  The Catamounts claimed a 10-point victory in the third set, 25-15, while the fourth went down to the wire.

Western Carolina led 20-18 before UTC rattled off three consecutive kills with the last two coming from Teter to go up 21-20. Western rattled off three in a row of its own to go back up 23-21. The Mocs got as close as 24-23 on yet another Teter put away before Timmerman closed it out with one of her own.

"They came out and completely out-played us in every aspect of the game," head coach Travis Filar said. "We had bounces and plays go how we wanted them because of how hard we worked, but we weren't aggressive. We didn't come out and provide a type of resistance or fight that we needed to against a good team. Now we have to regroup and get ready for Samford and Wofford next weekend."

Chattanooga returns to action next weekend as the Mocs host Samford Sept. 28 and Wofford Sept. 29 at Maclellan Gym. Both matches open serve at 7 p.m. There is a post-match autograph session for fans after each matchup.
