CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-The Chattanooga Mocs (7-11, 1-2 SoCon) dropped a three-set match to Samford (11-6, 3-0 SoCon) Friday night at Maclellan Gym
The Bulldogs win (25-10, 25-17, 25-18) keeps them atop the Southern Conference standings with a 3-0 conference mark, while the Mocs battle to stay in the middle of the pack in the SoCon North.
Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) paced the defense with 15 digs. Freshman Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.), senior Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), sophomore Kasey Talley (Boiling Springs, S.C.), and freshman Julimar Alvarado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) each collected a block.
The Bulldogs jumped on the Mocs early in the first set, taking the game with a 15 point advantage. Chattanooga was allowed back-to-back points just twice during the set. With the two points, UTC took a 2-1 lead but saw the advantage disappear quickly. The Mocs recorded six kills during the set loss, three coming from freshman Briana Reid (Houston, Texas).
Chattanooga showed life in the second stanza, but would come up short again. The 25-17 set win gave Samford a 2-0 lead going into the locker room for the intermission. UTC spiked a match-high 12 kills during the set as the crowd of 307 at Maclellan Gym witnessed six ties, but the Bulldogs pulled away with an 11-3 run to take the win.
Samford sealed the match with an 18-25 win in the third frame with a 25-18 score. UTC pieced together a four-point run early in the set to take a 5-4 lead, but the Bulldogs were able to hold off the Mocs and draw neck-and-neck with an 8-8 score. The Mocs trailed by as little as one point before Samford rallied behind Alexis Bauer's six serve turn, including an ace.
"Samford is a really good team," Head Coach Travis Filar said. "We knew that coming in. They are top of the conference and they have a lot of confidence. We weren't able to get into a rhythm or get comfortable. Now we have to come out believing we can play and compete against Wofford. We can't dwell on tonight's mistakes."
UTC looks to get back on track Saturday night as the Wofford Terriers come to the Scenic City for a 7 p.m. match. Live video of both matches is available online through MocsVision, and free live stats will be available through GoMocs.com via the links above.
"Moc of the Match" signed mini-volleyballs will be thrown into the crowd as the Mocs starting lineup is announced, t-shirts for each ace by a Chattanooga player will be thrown to the crowd, and post-match autographs from the team and coaches will be featured over the weekend.
