CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The Chattanooga Mocs (2-3/1-1) claimed a 28-10 win at No. 11 The Citadel (3-2/2-1) in Southern Conference action Saturday night. It's the highest-ranked road win for UTC since defeating No. 10 Appalachian State 30-9 on Oct. 8, 1983.
It was a great team win with highlights on both sides of the ball. The Mocs out-rushed the nation's No. 5 rushing attack 254 to 232 yards while accumulating 413 yards of total offense. The defense held the Bulldogs to nearly 100 yards below its average while forcing two turnovers.
The defense was stout in limiting the Bulldogs attack and the offense was even more impressive. Its four scoring drives went 78, 82, 85 and 85 yards on the evening. The Mocs held a 33:41-26:19 advantage in time of possession, 29:18 to 15:42 over the final three quarters.
The two-headed monster at quarterback worked to perfection for the Mocs. Terrell Robinson (South Pittsburg, Tenn.) ran for 97 yards and threw for 73, scoring touchdowns both ways. Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) ran for 80 yards and threw for 86 more including a score. The duo combined for 336 yards of total offense (Robinson 170 & Huesman 166).
Kendrix Huitt (Atlanta, Ga.) got his first extended collegiate action and came up big. He ran eight times for 57 yards including a 29-yard score in the fourth quarter. Ron Moore (Sanford, Fla.) had four catches for 76 yards and a touchdown of his own.
Darien Robinson led the Bulldogs with 132 yards on 12 carries. Backup quarterback Aaron Miller added 45, with 32 coming on The Citadel's lone touchdown of the night.
The Bulldogs drove 48 yards on the game's opening drive to take a 3-0 lead. That score held until the second quarter when the Mocs started its fourth drive of the contest on its own 22. Robinson ran twice for 14 yards until the first big play came for UTC.
Robinson threw a deep corner to Moore for 51 yards. After a no gain on first down, Robinson scrambled right, then left, then right again finding Moore standing alone in the end zone for the 13-yard score and a 7-3 lead.
After The Citadel's three-and-out, UTC started out on its own 18. Fifteen plays and 82 yards later, it was 14-3. Huesman found Faysal Shafaat (Orlando, Fla.) for a one-yard touchdown reception with less than six seconds left until intermission.
The Mocs scored again in the third quarter with Robinson, Huitt and Huesman leading the way. Robinson ran for 42 yards, Huitt for 19 and Huesman threw for 17. Huesman's 17-yard pass to Shafaat put Chattanooga at the Bulldogs 16. Robinson dashed 13 yards and then completed the drive rolling right into the end zone, three yards for 21-3 lead.
The Citadel answered on its next possession. It was a quick-strike drive. On second-and-13 at his own 41, Miller hit Greg Adams down the sideline for 22 yards. Two plays later, Miller darted 32 yards around right end to make it a 21-10 Mocs lead heading into the game's final frame.
But UTC did not bend. Starting on its own 15, Chattanooga made it back-to-back 85-yard drives. Huesman opened with a seven-yard pass to Robinson before running 36 yards up the middle of the field to The Citadel 42.
Tommy Hudson (Moultrie, Ga.) ran a 13-yard reverse to the 29. After a no gain for Robinson, Huitt busted loose up the middle for 29 yards untouched into the end zone posting the final score of 28-10.
There were several defensive heroes on the night. The defensive line as a unit was stout throughout. Safety D.J. Key (Centerville, Tenn.) had a game-high 12 tackles, while Shane Heatherly (Waynesville, N.C) and Kadeem Wise (Lawrenceville, Ga.) each had eight stops. Heatherly added a fumble recovery, while Wise made his ninth career interception.
Sadath Jean-Pierre and Carson Smith each had 11 tackles to lead The Citadel. Smith had one of the Bulldogs' four sacks joined on the list by Derek Douglas, Chris Billingslea and Mitchell Jeter.
The Mocs take next week off before traveling to Furman on Saturday, October 13. The game will broadcast on ESPN3.com with a 1:30 p.m., kickoff. Catch the audio broadcast on ESPN 105.1 FM the Zone on the Mocs Sports Network or via the football schedule page on GoMocs.com.
