Soccer Hosts Elon, UNCG; Senior Day Set for Sunday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team will close out the regular season with a three-game home stand beginning Friday night at Finley Stadium against Elon. The game will kick off at 7 p.m.

The Mocs (3-10-1, 1-7 SoCon) won their first Southern Conference game of the season last Sunday with a 3-2 decision over The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Senior Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) scored what would prove to be the game winner on a penalty kick in the second half. Chattanooga gave up a goal in the 17th minute to the Bulldogs before drawing even just before halftime with a goal from senior Kelsey Swann (Hixson, Tenn.). Swann and freshman Loryn Queen (Lanesville, Ind.) would combine for a second time on the Mocs' second goal of the game with a cross into the box to take the lead.

Smith's goal came later in the half when The Citadel defense pulled down one of Chattanooga's outside midfielders in the box prompting a foul call and a penalty kick. Smith blasted the shot past the Bulldog keeper for a 3-1 lead. However, The Citadel would mount a comeback attempt scoring once in the closing minutes to cut the lead to 3-2 and then forcing several shots toward Chattanooga's goal. Freshman Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.) was on top of her game and pulled in several saves to preserve the win.

The Mocs will host Elon (5-6-6, 3-1-4 SoCon) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Finley. On Sunday, UTC will host UNCG, ranked second in the league with a 9-6-1 overall record and a 6-1-1 SoCon mark. Sunday's game will be preceded by Senior Day ceremonies. The Mocs will honor seniors Jordan Middleton, Tayler Shelby, Becca Smith, Kelsey Swann and Lauren Wilson. The game is set to kick off at 1 p.m.

SCOUTING THE MOCS (3-10-1, 1-7-0 SoCon)
The Mocs earned their first Southern Conference victory last weekend with a 3-2 win over The Citadel. After giving up the first goal, the Mocs responded with one first half goal and two in the second and then held off the Bulldogs for the win. Senior Becca Smith provided the game winner on a penalty kick giving her a team-high five goals on the season and fifth in the SoCon. Freshman Lauren Thomas leads the league with 90 saves (7.6/game) and has a .769 goals against average.

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX (5-6-6, 3-1-4)
Elon is fifth in the league standings and is on a six-game unbeaten streak with three wins and three ties, all against SoCon foes. It's lone league loss was a 2-1 decision at home against Appalachian State. Simi Dhaliwal leads the team with three goals while Chelsey Stark and Raychel Diver have two goals apiece. Kimmie Krauss has a team-high three assists while Diver has two. Kate Murphy has started 14 of 15 games and has 85 saves on the year with a 0.99 goals against average and five shutouts.

SERIES HISTORY
The Mocs are 4-5 against the Phoenix with the two teams splitting the matches over the last four years.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS (9-6-1, 6-1-1)
UNCG is second in the league standings and on a current six-game unbeaten streak with five wins in that span. Six Spartans have multiple goals on the year led by Chesney White's five and Cat Barnekow's four. Barnekow has a team-best five assists and leads UNCG with 13 points. Zoe Fishman has four assists and Ashley Stokes has contributed three. In goal, Jamie Simmons has started all 16 games in the net and has 84 saves on the year with a 1.25 goals against average and five shutouts including each of the last three games.

SERIES HISTORY
The Mocs are 3-12-1 against the Spartans. UNCG has won each of the last six meetings. Chattanooga's last win over the Spartans was in 2005, capping of a four-year unbeaten streak aginst UNCG.

MOCS IN THE NATIONAL STANDINGS
Freshman Lauren Thomas has a SoCon-leading 90 saves (7.5/game) and is ranked 24th by the NCAA among all Division I women's soccer players for total saves.

Freshman Hannah Wyatt is ranked third in the league standings for assists with five, averaging 0.36/game. She is ranked 108th in the NCAA for total assists and 113th for assists per game.

SMITH CLIMBS UTC'S ALL-TIME RANKINGS
Senior Becca Smith continues her ascent up the all-time scoring rankings at UTC. She  has a team-high five goals this season and is second on the all-time scoring chart with 84 career points. She trails Diana Jallo's (2002-05) 87 points and surpassed former teammate Donna-Kay Henry's (2008-11) 78 in the UTC record books. She now has 35 career goals, moving past Henry and trailing Jallo by two. Her 14 career assists trail Maya Peel's (2003-05) 18 and Henry's 16. Smith is a preseason All-Southern Conference selection after leading the league in scoring and goals with a school-record 37 points on 16 goals and five assists in 2011.

THOMAS NETS CAREER-HIGH SAVES
Freshman Lauren Thomas had to sit out for two games after suffering an injury in UTC's Southern Conference opening game. Upon her return to the net, she snared 19 saves, ranking fourth best for a single game in school history. She is currently ranked 24th by the NCAA for total saves with 90.

FRESHMEN HAVING A BIG IMPACT
The Lady Mocs have five freshmen in the starting lineup and they had a big impact in the opening weekend. Newcomers scored six of the nine goals, eight of the nine assists and logged a shutout in the 6-0 win over Tennessee Temple. Forward Hannah Wyatt scored one goal and a dished out a team-high three assists while midfielder Skylar Brewer recorded two goals and one assist.

EXCELLENT IN THE CLASSROOM
The Lady Mocs have been outstanding in the classroom over the last three years. They have maintained at least a 3.0 team grade-point-average since the fall of 2009. During that span, at least 10 members of the team have made the Dean's List (3.2+ GPA) each semester.

HEAD COACH J.D. KYZER
J.D. Kyzer is in this 13th season at Chattanooga and his 18th as a collegiate head coach. The 2003 SoCon Coach of the Year is the all-time winningest coach at UTC.
