CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team closed out the 2012 season Wednesday night at Finley Stadium with a 3-0 loss to Southern Rail Rival Samford. The Mocs drop to 3-13-1 overall and 1-10 in Southern Conference play while the Bulldogs improve to 11-6-2 on the year and 8-1-2 in league action.
In the final game of their UTC careers, all five Chattanooga players took the field to start the match despite injuries to two. Seniors Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Jordan Middleton (Ooltewah, Tenn.) were on the field for the start for their final hurrah.
Samford jumped on the board first with a goal in the second minute from Trine Tuale, her fifth of the year. The Bulldogs scored a second goal midway through the opening stanza when Michelle Moll picked up the ball on an errant UTC pass. A 50-yard breakaway run put Samford up 2-0 at the 27:16 mark of the game.
The Mocs held off the Bulldogs the remainder of the half to go into intermission down 2-0.
In the second half, Samford kept up the offensive push and Chattanooga pushed back allowing just one goal. At the 56:05 mark of the game, Adrianne Mancino sent a pass from the right side of the field and it was picked up by Lindseay Hanson. She sent a header past Chattanooga keeper Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.) for the final score.
Samford outshot Chattanooga 26-3. Thomas, the Chattanooga freshman keeper, pulled in 13 saves with 10 in the first half and three in the second. The Bulldogs picked up the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament.
