School-Record 11 Teams Post 3.0 G.P.A. in the Fall
By all accounts, the Lady Mocs basketball team had a pretty good fall semester on the court.  They went 8-2, including a historic win over No. 20 Tennessee on Nov. 9.  The only thing that can overshadow their success in competition is their performance in the classroom.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team posted a program-record 3.40 team grade-point-average in the 2012 fall semester.  That crushed their previous record of 3.17 set in the fall of 2007.  The Lady Mocs were one of a school-record 11 teams at UTC to finish the fall with a 3.0 g.p.a. or higher.

Individually, the Lady Mocs set another program mark with 10 members on the Dean's List.  Senior Kayla Christopher, a starting guard and second leading scorer, was one of 23 Mocs with a perfect 4.0 g.p.a. in the fall.

All totaled, there were 130 student-athletes on the Dean's List (3.2 g.p.a.) and 161 on the Athletics Director Honor Roll (3.0 g.p.a.).  Those numbers were second only to the totals in the 2010 fall semester (137 & 168).  Only two other times have 11 teams had a 3.0 in the same term, including the Spring of 2011 and the Fall of 2010.

"Our student-athletes have a strong commitment to academics, and our coaches and administrators are focused on guiding, encouraging and supporting their academic endeavors," stated UTC Interim Director of Athletics Laura Herron.  "We have a vision of establishing comprehensive excellence as the UTC standard and this includes success in the classroom, in competition and in the community."

The entire Mocs athletics department finished with a 2.93 overall g.p.a., the second highest fall semester on record.  Chattanooga student-athletes recorded at least a 2.92 in each of the last five semesters and half of the Mocs posted a 3.0 or higher in seven-straight terms.

Women's cross country led the way with a 3.77 team g.p.a. and five individuals with a perfect 4.0.  All nine members of the team made the Dean's List.  The combined g.p.a. of the women's cross country and track & field team was also a program-record 3.64.

Men's tennis (3.46) and wrestling (2.89) also had program record g.p.a.'s  All nine members of the Mocs netters made the A.D. Honor Roll with a 3.0 or higher.  The wrestling team also set program-records with 14 on the Dean's List and 18 on the A.D. Honor Roll.

"Since we started formally tracking and reporting g.p.a.'s, we have seen a dramatic increase in the performance of our student-athletes in the classroom," added Herron.  "We have a stated goal of achieving and maintaining a 3.0 g.p.a. across the board and will continue to push toward this benchmark."

The Mocs began tracking the combined g.p.a. of student-athletes in 2007.  The charts below include the overall g.p.a. trends since that time, as well as the percentage of student-athletes on the A.D. Honor Roll.
