Bunn Leads Mocs with Opening Round 71

ROCKY FACE, Ga.--- Senior Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) fired a one-under par 71 Friday to lead the Chattanooga Mocs in the opening round of the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate. Chattanooga is tied for 13th after starting with a 306 total.

Bunn’s card included a career high-tying six birdies with the last coming on the treacherous 256-yard par three eighth hole, his 17th of the day. He just missed birdie on the par five ninth closing with his 71.

“Davis had a great, great round,” Head Coach Mark Guhne stated. “It was not easy out there and any score under par was well earned.”

Guhne’s freshman quartet of Wes Gosselin (Knxoville, Tenn.), Ewan Scot (St. Andrews, Scotland), Brook Thomas (Chattanooga) and Stuart Thomas (Knoxville) had a tough day. Scott went out in 42 (+6), but shook off the slow start to play his second nine at one under for a 77 (+5). He was two shots better than Gosselin and Stuart Thomas at 79. Brooks ended up with an 85.

“Opening your career on this tract is not an easy task,” Guhne added. “I could line them all up and tell them how disappointing the 306 is, but they know they are better than that, and they understand what we need to do. I’m very confident in each one’s ability to bounce back tomorrow.”

Georgia Tech holds the team and individual leads. The Yellow Jackets have a 10-stroke advantage combining to shoot a spectacular eight-under 280. North Carolina is second at 290 followed by Georgia which shot 291. Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans is the leader after a five-under 67, one ahead of the Tar Heels’ Bailey Patrick.

Chattanooga opens play on No. 10 at 9:20 a.m., for Saturday’s second round. Brooks Thomas leads off followed by Stuart Thomas (9:31), Gosselin (9:42), Scott (9:53) and Bunn (10:04). The Mocs are paired with Tennessee and the five individuals entered separate of the team competition.
