Volleyball Completes UTC Saturday Sweep of The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Following the lead of the Chattanooga Mocs football team with a 28-24 victory over the Citadel at Finley Stadium Saturday afternoon, Head Coach Travis Filar’s Mocs volleyball team claimed a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs in Charleston, S.C.  The win brings UTC's Southern Conference record to 3-7 on the season.

For the second night in a row, sophomore Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) put up double-digit kills, digs and points. The attacker totaled 15 kills, 16 digs and 17.0 points on the night, while junior Kasey Talley (Boiling Springs, S.C.) led the Mocs with 16 kills and a team-best 18.5 points. Sophomore Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished third with 15.5 points and 15 kills.

"This is about as complete of a team win we have had all season," Filar said of the Mocs. "The Citadel truly fought hard all match and made things tough on us, but our team just stayed together and they had a collective will to win."

Despite falling 27-25 in a nail-biting first set to the Bulldogs, UTC went on to claim the next three frames of the match 25-18, 25-17 and 25-19.

The Citadel had its best offensive set in the first with a .333 hitting percentage and 18 kills. Chattanooga tied the Bulldogs with 18 kills of its own in the set.  However, seven errors compared to The Citadel’s three helped hand the Bulldogs to the two points they needed to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Mocs retaliated with 15 kills in the second frame and a match-best .343 hitting percentage. UTC held the Bulldogs to a .088 hitting percentage in the second, and The Citadel hitting stats would only sink from there.  They were .048 in the third and .029 in the final set.

The Bulldogs led 10-6 before UTC went on a huge run. Chattanooga scored 19 of the match’s final 27 points.

Chattanooga won the third set with its largest margin of the day – eight points – and hit .200. UTC took 14 kills over the Bulldogs’ nine and nearly repeated the feat in the fourth set with a seven point victory. UTC hit a match-low .186 with 16 kills while The Citadel only recorded nine kills and committed a match-worst eight errors. They managed just 34 attacks against the Mocs in the final set.

"Now we have to continue to work and get better," Filar said. "We have to build on the momentum we gained this weekend and I know our team can do just that."

The Mocs are back on the road Friday to take on Samford in Birmingham, Ala., before returning home next Sunday to host Davidson for a 2 p.m. matchup to kick off the week.
