CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Chattanooga Mocs softball team capped off the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla., with a 2-1 win over Toledo Sunday afternoon. The Middle-Tennessee pitching duo of junior Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) and sophomore Rachel Albritton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) held the Rockets to just one run and six hits over six innings. The two right-handers combined for nine strikeouts.
Chattanooga’s offense backed the one-run performance with two runs for a slim win. The Mocs claimed a lead first in the bottom of the first inning on the back of sophomore shortstop Criket Blanco (Maryville,Tenn.).
With Alyssa Taylor (Orange, Calif.) on at first base on a single with one out, the sophomore moved to second on a wild pitch. Taylor on at second, Blanco laced a single through the left side to score the runner. The RBI was Blanco’s team-leading 20th of the season.
Leading 1-0, Toledo bounced back with one run in the top of the second on two hits off Albritton. A leadoff double from Lani Ernst was followed up with an RBI double from Erinn Wright tied the game 1-1.
Chattanooga jumped back ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third thanks to a wild pitch. With Sam Taylor (Chickamauga, Ga.) at third with two outs, a pitch in the dirt that rolled to the backstop allowed the sophomore to motor home.
Deason picked up the win, improving to 7-5, and pushing the Mocs to 13-11 on the season. UTC finished the weekend 3-2 in the Sunshine State.
Chattanooga continues its spring break Wednesday as the Mocs travel to Clarksville, Tenn., to take on Austin Peay. UTC takes on the Govs at 2 and 4:30 p.m.
