The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga set a new program record with 20 student-athletes on the 2013-14 Winter Academic All-Southern Conference team. The Mocs tied for the most 4.0s in the league and were second in overall membership on the team.
All of UTC's teams were represented on the latest edition of the academic all-conference squad, which consisted of student-athletes in the sports of men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field, and wrestling.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the winter season and participate in at least one-half of their teams' competitions. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
Indoor track & field's Patrick O'Brien and Helenka Kis, along with wrestling's John Lampe, were Chattanooga's three student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
UTC is coming off a school-record 2.99 overall GPA in the fall, and 12 programs had a 3.0 team GPA for the first time. Chattanooga's previous record for representation on the Winter Academic All-SoCon team was 17 in 2011 and 2008.
Don't miss your chance to celebrate this and all of the accomplishments of Chattanooga Athletics at next week's Scrappy Awards. The third annual Scrappy Awards is set for Thursday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Chattanoogan Hotel. Tickets are on sale now and more information is available here.
