Mocs Down Georgia Southern to Advance at SoCon Tournament

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team scored a 4-0 win over Georgia Southern in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament today.  The Mocs won two doubles and four singles matches in the team win.

Chattanooga opened with strong doubles play, led by sophomores Katie Polk and Kayla Jones at No. 2.  They defeated Georgia Southern’s Stephanie Woods and Guilia Riepe 8-2.  Senior Alexa Flynn and junior Kaylene Chadwell secured the 1-0 lead with an 8-4 win over Paola Garrido and Caitlin Kitchen at No. 1.

“I actually felt like we played a little more relaxed then you might expect for a first round conference match,” stated head coach Jeff Clark.  “The nerves are always heightened a little bit more because it’s win or go home.  I’m not sure if it’s less pressure or more pressure, but I think they like playing at home.  We had a great crowd to come out and support us today, and they played very relaxed for sure.”

UTC kept the momentum going in singles play, winning the first set in five of the six matches.  Flynn gave the Mocs a 2-0 lead with her shutout (6-0, 6-0) against Stephanie Woods at No. 3. Flynn adds to her career high with her 22nd win of the season.  It was also the 75th singles victory of her four-year career.

Jones only dropped three games in her (6-1, 6-2) win over Garrido at No. 1.  That gave the Mocs a 3-0 lead while Jones improved to a team-best 24-10 in singles.  Sophomore Kelsey Coots clinched the match with a (6-0, 6-1) win over Woods at No. 4.

“That’s what you want,” added Clark.  “Getting on and off without expending more energy than you need.  They had some positions that concerned me, particularly No. 2 where they took the first set.  They switched their doubles up recently and have been playing better.  It’s exactly what you want in the first match because we’re going to need everything we’ve got in the tank against Samford.”

The win moves UTC to 18-4 overall, tying last year’s win total.  That is the most victories in a season since winning 21 in 1991.

The Mocs advance to tomorrow’s semifinals against Samford who defeated Appalachian State 4-0 today.  UTC dropped last week’s regular season meeting on the road to the Bulldogs 4-3.
