CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- In a battle of first-place teams, the Chattanooga (9-11/5-4) men's basketball program welcomes Davidson (16-3/9-0) to town on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the McKenzie Arena. The North Division leader hosts the South Division's top team with a scheduled tipoff of 7 p.m.
Chattanooga is coming off a split in the Piedmont swing to UNC Greensboro and Elon winning by 18, 72-54 at Greensboro, before dropping a 86-85 decision in double overtime to the Phoenix snapping a five game winning streak in the process. The Mocs have won seven of their last 10 after a 2-8 start against a brutal schedule.
Kevin Goffney is on quite a roll for the Mocs. He has scored 20-plus points in three of the last four games including a career high of 23 at Elon. Goffney is averaging 15.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game against SoCon opponents.
Stephen McDowell's impressive season continues as he ranks as the conference leader in three-pointers made per game (4.3) and is fifth in three-point field goal percentage (43.4%). He ranks third and 22nd nationally, respectively, in those two categories. He also 34th in scoring averaging 19.4 points per game, that's good for second in the SoCon.
Davidson is picking up where it left off a year ago when it went to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats' three losses are to Oklahoma, Purdue and Duke. Davidson has won 39 consecutive SoCon games.
The Wildcats are led by junior guard Stephen Curry. Curry leads the nation in scoring at 29.3 points per game, while also leading the conference in assists (6.4/gm) and steals (2.9/gm). Andrew Lovedale is the key inside presence for Davidson averaging 11.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
WHO: Nicchaeus Doaks. Doaks is just one point shy of 1,200 for his career. He leads the SoCon in rebounding (9.5 rpg), while ranking 13th in scoring (13.7 ppg), fifth in blocks (1.2 bpg) and 12th in field goal percentage (48.9%).
