CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Southern Conference Sports Media Association (SCSMA) announced its selections for the 2009 all-conference men's basketball team Wednesday with two Mocs earning mention. UTC's Stephen McDowell and Nicchaeus Doaks were named to the first and second teams, respectively.
The media panel also selected Davidson junior Stephen Curry as the Malcolm U. Pitt Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Ed Conroy of The Citadel was selected Anton Foy Coach of the Year, while Western Carolina's Harouna Mutombo was named Freshman of the Year.
McDowell ended the regular season averaging 18.3 points per game. He leads the league in three-pointers made per game (3.9) while ranking fourth nationally. The graduate student is the Mocs' record holder for three-pointers made for a season (120) and career (228).
McDowell and Curry are joined on the first team by Noah Dahlman (Wofford), Andrew Goudelock (Charleston) and Demetrius Nelson (The Citadel).
Doaks leads the SoCon in rebounding at 8.9 boards per came. He holds the modern era record for career rebounds (791) and free throws attempted (555). Doaks is joined on the second team by Kellen Brand (Appalachian State), Andrew Lovedale (Davidson), Harouna Mutumbo (Western Carolina) and Cameron Wells (The Citadel).
The 2009 Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament begins Friday, March 6 at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga. The Mocs, one of four teams with a first round bye, do not tip off until 7 p.m. on Saturday.
