CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Southern Conference announced the coaches selections for the 2009 all-conference men's basketball team Thursday as two Mocs received mention. UTC's Stephen McDowell and Nicchaeus Doaks were named to the 10-member squad.
The league's 12 head coaches also named Davidson junior Stephen Curry as the Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Ed Conroy of The Citadel was selected Coach of the Year, Western Carolina's Harouna Mutombo Freshman of the Year and Davidson's Max-Paulhus Gosselin Defensive Player of the Year.
McDowell ended the regular season averaging 18.3 points per game. He leads the league in three-pointers made per game (3.9) while ranking fourth nationally. The graduate student is the Mocs' record holder for three-pointers made for a season (120) and career (228). Doaks leads the SoCon in rebounding at 8.9 boards per came. He holds the modern era record for career rebounds (791) and free throws attempted (555).
Doaks, McDowell and Curry are joined on the team by Noah Dahlman (Wofford), Andrew Goudelock (Charleston), Andrew Lovedale (Davidson), Harouna Mutumbo (Western Carolina), Demetrius Nelson (The Citadel) and Cameron Wells (The Citadel).
Mutumbo is one five on the league's All-Freshman squad with John Brown (The Citadel), Ben Drayton III (Georgia Southern), Damian Eargle (UNC Greensboro) and Brad Loesing (Wofford).
The 2009 Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament begins Friday, March 6 at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga. The Mocs, one of four teams with a first round bye, do not tip off until 7 p.m. on Saturday.
