Mocs Women’s Golf Season Wrap-up

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team completed its 2012-13 season in what has become the usual fashion. UTC captured its fourth straight Southern Conference Championship and third individual in a row while competing in NCAA postseason play.

In the six years since Colette Murray started the program, the Mocs have played in NCAA Regionals. The inaugural season of 2008 saw freshman phenom Emma de Groot (2008-11) qualify as an individual. Every squad since that sensational starting point has made it to regionals.

The 2009 team went one step further advancing to the NCAA Championship round. With all six Mocs back for the 2013-14 campaign, Chattanooga is in excellent position for a repeat performance.

- Sauzon captured her first win at the Southern Conference Championship. She is UTC’s third straight medalist in the event (de Groot 2011, Britt 2012).

- Emily McLennan posted the second best freshman scoring average (75.76) in school history. She ranks behind de Groot who tallied 74.06 strokes per round in 2008.

- Britt, Sauzon and McLennan all earned All-SoCon honors, the second such award for Britt. McLennan was also named league freshman of the year.

- Sauzon led the team scoring average (75.67), pars (12.14/rd), par 5 scoring (5.04), par/better rounds (4), par/better holes (75.7%) and fewest bogeys (3.52/rd).

- Sauzon’s stroke average was 74.59 in her 17 counting rounds.

- McLennan led the way in par 3 scoring (3.19), par 4 scoring (4.26), birdies (67) and top 10’s (4 with 3 Top 5’s). She was second in scoring (75.76) and was the only student-athlete to count in all 33 team rounds.

- Britt had the fewest others on the team with 18, 0.6 per round.

- Isabella Loza was the squad’s low scorer in three spring tourneys. Her best 54-hole total was 223 tying for 28th at the difficult SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational, while her best finish was tied for 12th at the SoCon Championship. Loza finished second to McLennan with 54 birdies.

- Sauzon recorded 38 or more pars in a tourney four times eclipsing 40 twice with a team-best 41 at the Web.com Intercollegiate and 40 in her SoCon triumph.

- Sauzon was named SoCon April Golfer of the Month for her exceptional play winning the SoCon Championship and tying for eighth at the Web.com Intercollegiate. Her scoring average for the month was 72.5 strokes per round.

- The playoff win for SoCon Medalist was an impressive display from Sauzon. College of Charleston’s Mary Chandler Bryan was on the front of the green with an uphill 30-footer for birdie. Sauzon pulled out her 52 degree wedge and hit it to within three feet from 96 yards out to capture the title with birdie.

- Sauzon earned Southern Conference Golfer of the Week honors on April 10 for her play at the Web.com Intercollegiate.

- Sauzon’s +1 total of 217 at last week’s Web.com Intercollegiate is the Mocs lowest 54-hole total since Christine Wolf’s 209 at the 2011 JMU Eagle Landing Invitational.

- Former Mocs standouts Emma de Groot (2008-11) and Christine Wolf (2008-11) are working on their professional careers in the United States and Europe, respectively. Wolf earned partial status on the Ladies European Tour and full card on the LET Access Tour for 2013, while de Groot is in her second year on the Symetra Tour in the U.S., after finishing second in the Club Car series on the Australian Ladies Professional Golf Tour.
