CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs outside hitter Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week Monday afternoon for her performance over last week's three matches.
Chattanooga was 2-1 on the week, taking a 3-1 loss at Samford Tuesday, but made up for the fall by claiming two wins at Maclellan Gym Friday and Saturday night. The Mocs defeated UNG Greensboro Friday night while downing Elon Saturday night. With both matches decided in five sets, UTC improved to 10-3 at home and is now in position to advance to the SoCon Tournament for the first time since the 2008 season.
Reid was instrumental in the Mocs successful week on the court, providing 42 kills and 64 digs over the three-match span. The freshman tallied a .419 attacking percentage while averaging 4.57 digs per set. Along with dealing three kills per set, Reid also collected three double-doubles on the week to bring her season total to five.
Reid's offensive tear began Oct. 30 in Birmingham, Ala., against the first-place Bulldogs. Despite the 3-1 loss, the young outside hitter managed 11 kills and 10 digs against 20-8 Samford. Reid's double-digit kills fell just two short of the team leader, Julimar Alvarado (San Juan, Puerto Rico), and her 11 digs were good for second on the team. Reid finished with a .265 attacking percentage.
The freshman dominated the court Friday night in the Mocs 3-2 win over the Spartans. Reid downed a team-best 17 kills while taking a match-high 54 swings. Committing just two errors on the night, Reid hit a match-best .278 to lead UTC hitters. Stellar on defense, as well, the outside hitter fielded 26 attacks cleanly to trail match-leader Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) who recorded 29 digs.
Reid recorded her third-straight double-double the next night in yet another 3-2 win, this time topping the visiting Elon Phoenix. The freshman recorded 14 kills and 28 digs, finishing second in each category on the night. She also blocked an Elon attack, totaling 15 points in all.
Reid and the Mocs are back in action Friday night in Cullowhee, N.C., at 6 p.m. taking on the Western Carolina Catamounts. Chattanooga will finish out the regular season at 7 p.m. Saturday night in Boone, N.C., with Appalachian State. UTC must win one match to advance to the SoCon Tournament.
