Pollard Named to CFPA Punters Watch List

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- College Football Performance Awards, the largest awards organization in D-I college football, recently announced its watch list for the 2013 CFPA Punter Award, and Nick Pollard earned a spot on the list. The preliminary watch list highlights 32 returning performers, vying for the top individual punter award in the Football Championship Subdivision.

"Congratulations to Nick Pollard on earning a spot on the 2013 CFPA Watch List," said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. "Pollard excelled in the punting game in 2012 with 10-of-55 punts of 50 or more yards."

Pollard, a native of Smyrna, Tenn., has been the starting place-kicker for the Mocs the last two seasons, but also took over the punting duties in 2012.  He ranked in the top-25 in the nation in punting last season, averaging 41.5 yards-per-kick on 55 tries.

Pollard had two punts go for more than 60 yards and another eight that were over 50 yards.  He was second in the SoCon with 23 kicks downed inside the 20.

Using an unorthodox rugby-style of punting, Pollard prefers to drive the ball low and hard.  His punts do not hang in the air and are quickly bouncing down the field.  This makes it tough for returners to make a play on the ball.  Chattanooga finished third in the SoCon and No. 14 in the nation in net punting last season with a 38.2-yard average.

After averaging 43.2 yards on six punts in Chattanooga's season-ending win over Elon, Pollard grabbed the SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week honor.  He pinned the Phoenix inside their own 20-yard line on five of his six punts.  Two of his final three punts were downed inside Elon’s 10-yard line.  Pollard booted three punts over 50 yards, including a game-high 58-yarder.

Pollard joins teammates D.J. Key (DB), Kadeem Wise (DB), Jacob Huesman (QB), Faysal Shafaat (TE), Derrick Lott (DL), Davis Tull (DL), and Wes Dothard (LB) on the various 2013 CFPA Watch Lists.

All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.

The full list of 2013 recipients, including the 2013 CFPA FCS Awards, will be announced on January 8, 2014.
