Mocs Volleyball Claims Win over Southern Miss

OXFORD, Miss. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team claimed a 3-2 win Friday afternoon over the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in its first match of the Ole Miss Rebel Classic. The win is Chattanooga’s first victory of the season and puts the Mocs at 1-0 in the tournament.

The Mocs took the first set of the match convincingly 25-13. Sophomore Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) downed four kills and an ace, while freshman Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) collected two aces, a kill and two blocks. Sophomore Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) assisted in six kills for the Mocs in the set.

Chattanooga claimed the second set with a 25-21 score, taking a 2-0 lead in the match at the break. Davenport added five more kills to her total and freshman setter Anne Bachmann (Lincoln, Neb.) totaled eight assists and an ace.

Southern Miss turned the tide with a 25-19 win in the third set. Kristen Fleming collected 13 assists and attacker Elise Ames spiked five kills against the Mocs.

The Golden Eagles stormed back in the fourth set 25-22 to even the match at 2-2. Despite tallying more attacks (37), UTC was outscored by the Eagles with 14 kills as the Mocs committed eight errors.

Chattanooga outscored Southern Miss 17-15 in the deciding set. Forcing the match to extra points, the Mocs played catch-up with the Eagles at the midway point. UTC fought off two Southern Miss match points with back-to-back points tying the frame at 14-14.

Davenport emerged as the offensive leader with 16 kills as freshman Kendall Sexton (Orlando, Fla.) found a groove with 11 points. Junior Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the defense with 23 digs and sophomore Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) registered seven blocks – including two solo.

The Mocs fell 3-1 to Louisiana-Lafayette in the nightcap. The Ragin' Cajuns won 26-24, 19-25, 18-25, 19-25.

UTC won the first set 26-24 after recording a match-best 16 kills but fell in the following three sets. Reid led the Mocs with 14 kills, while Davenport ended the match with 11 kills and sophomore Julimar Alvarado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) collected 10 kills.

Chason totaled 29 assists and Reid led the defense with 16 digs. Sexton recorded the match's only block.

The Mocs wrap up the Rebel Classic Saturday at Noon against Ole Miss. Live stats and a live video feed are both available for the match.
