University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior defensive end Davis Tull is the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Tull led the Mocs to a dominating 31-9 win over Furman this weekend, upping UTC’s overall record to 4-2 and 2-1 in SoCon action.
Tull anchored the Mocs’ defense, which held Furman to 189 yards in a 31-9 victory for UTC. He recorded five tackles and was credited with 3.5 sacks, which resulted in minus-21 yards. The junior added two forced fumbles and came up with a fumble recovery.
Tull now has 23.0 career sacks and is just one half-sack shy of tying the school record set by Josh Williams (2009-12). The Knoxville, Tenn., native currently ranks second in the SoCon and No. 14 in the nation with 5.5 sacks this season.
Tull’s 23.0 career sacks are fifth nationally among active career sack leaders. He is also the only junior listed in the top-5.
Despite being the reigning SoCon Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus All-American, this is the first SoCon Defensive Player of the Week for Tull in his career. It is the first weekly defensive honor for a Moc since Kadeem Wise following Week 5 last season.
The Mocs hit the road this week, continuing SoCon action at Elon. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. (E.D.T.) at Rhodes Stadium in Elon, N.C., on Saturday, Oct. 19. Be sure to tune into the Mocs Sports Network on ESPN 105.1 FM The Zone for all of the action on Saturday.
