Mocs Split Matches on Opening Night

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team split its first two matches on opening night of the 2013-14 season at Maclellan Gym.  The Mocs defeated Cumberland 42-3, before dropping a closer-than-the-final-score 37-3 bout to No. 8 Wisconsin.

Wisconsin opened the tri-meet with a 51-3 win over Cumberland, followed by the Mocs victory over the Bulldogs.  Chattanooga scored bonus points in seven of nine wins against Cumberland, including pins by juniors Kevin Malone (285) and Levi Clemons (174).  UTC also scored technical falls by freshman Zach Bridson at 125, sophomore Austin Sams at 141, freshman Michael Hooker at 149 and senior Alex Hudson at 157.

Freshman Scottie Boykin had a strong start to his collegiate career.  He scored a takedown at the buzzer to post a 12-4 major decision over Scott Stewart at 197.  Junior Corey Mock posted a 9-2 decision over Kirk Johnson at 165.

The final margin in the Mocs match with Wisconsin was not indicative of how close it could have been.  Chattanooga was in six matches but only managed one victory.

Sams gave No. 10 Jesse Thielke a run at 141 before falling 8-4.  With the match tied at 2-2 at the end of the second period, Thielke scored an escape and takedown to go ahead 5-2.  Sams escaped and forced stalling calls to cut the lead to 5-4.  Trailing big on riding time, he went for broke at the buzzer, but Thielke took him down.

In the 141-pound match, Hooker took a 4-2 lead in the third against T.J. Ruschell with a reversal.  Rushcell closed the gap to 4-3 with a stalling penalty and won at the buzzer with a reversal of his own.

Hudson battled No. 7 Isaac Jordan at 157.  He escaped with 29 seconds left in the third to pull to within one at 3-2.  He stayed aggressive and got a stalling point to tie the match 3-3 in regulation.  Jordan won with a takedown just over 20 seconds into sudden victory overtime.

The Mocs lone win on the evening came at 165.  Mock posted a 6-1 decision over Frank Cousins.  UTC lost two more close matches the rest of the way.  Clemson fell to Scott Liegel 8-7 on riding time at 174.  Freshman Jared Johnson also lost by riding time, falling to Timmy McCall 6-5 at 197.

“The difference between being good and great is winning those close matches,” stated head coach Heath Eslinger.  “We were in six matches against a top-10 team.  We have to find a way to win those close one if we want to get to the next level.”

The Mocs hit the road for a full day of wrestling at the Hokie Open and Hokie Duals on Monday.  A number of individuals will compete in the open with the team facing Hofstra, No. 17 Virginia Tech and Rider in the duals.  Live scoring for the duals is available on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com.
