Three Mocs Named Preseason All-American

Three members of the Chattanooga Mocs football team were named to the 2014 The Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Preseason All-America Team today.  Senior defensive end Davis Tull, senior tight end Faysal Shafaat and senior defensive tackle Derrick Lott give the Mocs three preseason selections for the second year in a row.

Tull, the two-time Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year and two-time All-American, is among the top returning defensive players in the nation.  He is a first team selection for the second straight year and leads a loaded defensive line.

Tull is the first Moc to win two league player of the year honors and the first to repeat as SoCon Defensive Player of the Year since Appalachian State’s Dexter Coakley took the award three times from 1994-96. He is UTC’s all-time leader with 26.5 career sacks and is the active leader in the FCS for career sacks and career forced fumbles (8).  He is also the first Capital One Academic All-American in the history of the Mocs football program.

Shafaat made the third team for his second preseason All-American recognition.  He is a two-time first team All-SoCon selection and one of the top weapons in the passing game for the Mocs the last two seasons.

He had 322 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 35 catches last season.  His 13 career receiving TDs ranks No. 6 on the Mocs all-time list.

After earning second team All-SoCon honors in 2012, big things were expected from Lott last season.  The transfer from Georgia had his 2013 campaign cut short with an elbow injury at Georgia Southern early in the year.  He was granted a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA and is again expected to be a major part of the Mocs defensive front.

Chattanooga is coming off an 8-4 season in 2013.  The Mocs were 6-2 in league play, sharing the SoCon title for the first time since 1984.

UTC kicks off the 2014 season at Central Michigan on Thursday, Aug. 28.  Fans can catch that 7:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) game on ESPN3.  The home opener is set against longtime regional rival and top 10 opponent Jacksonville State on Saturday, Sept. 6.  Season tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).
