The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga held its first full scrimmage of training camp at Finley Stadium this afternoon. The Mocs took part in a 93-play session on a steamy afternoon in the Scenic City.
“We executed really well today,” said head coach Russ Huesman following the workout. “I thought, defensively, we ran to the ball. No one was standing around. You have to take it for what it is, but I came out really pleased with what we were able to do today.
There were a lot of new faces and younger players on the field today, but junior quarterback Jacob Huesman still led the first group. He promptly stepped up on the first drive to convert a third-and-seven with a 10-yard pass to Tommy Hudson.
Huesman capped an eight-play, 60-yard opening possession with a 31-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Xavier Borishade. Borishade had an excellent afternoon, finishing with five catches for 95 yards. Huesman was also solid, running eight times for 39 yards and throwing for 105 yards on 9/16 passing.
Redshirt freshman Alejandro Bennifield and Tyler Roberson are in a battle for the backup QB position. Bennifield took the majority of the snaps today, posting yards on 6/14 passing while running four times for five yards.
Defensively, Keionta Davis had an outstanding day. The sophomore defensive end posted 3.5 tackles-for-loss and was disruptive all afternoon. Sophomore linebacker Nakevion Leslie was also solid with 1.5 TFLs.
“Today was a very good first scrimmage,” added Leslie. “As a defense, I felt like we were all moving in the right direction. We all did what we were supposed to do. There were some times we gave up a play or two here and there, but those were simple mistakes by us on our part. I felt like it was a good start. It gives us something to watch and go back and learn from.”
Some of the highlights of the day included Bennifield connecting with freshman Alphonso Stewart for a 46-yard gain near the end of the day. Roberson had a 37-yard connection of his own with Borishade.
The one that got the biggest response came during the quick field goal simulation. Sophomore Henrique Ribeiro sprinted on to the field and nailed a 54-yarder with plenty of room to spare.
The Mocs will enjoy their first day off of camp on Sunday before getting back on the field for Monday’s two-a-day. The first session is 7:45 a.m. with the second in the evening at 6:30 p.m. at Scrappy Moore Field.
