The team g.p.a. is comprised of 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.
Harvard led the way with a 3.51, followed by American (3.48), Columbia (3.29), South Dakota State (3.23), Old Dominion (3.17) and Princeton (3.15). Nebraska (3.13), Utah Valley (3.13) and Cornell (3.11) rounded out the top-10.
"One of our goals is to win the Team Academic Award for having the highest g.p.a.," stated head coach Heath Eslinger. "Last year, we had more individuals named Academic All-NWCA than any other team in the country, and this year our entire team is in the top-10. We are moving in the right direction in the classroom and our guys are just as committed to academic success as they are to winning on the mat."
Individually, the Mocs had four earn Academic All-NWCA accolades this year, including Demetrius Johnson, Jason McCroskey, Dean Pavlou and Brandon Wright. It was the third time McCroskey was honored while Johnson, Pavlou and Wright all had their names called for the second time.
McCroskey graduated Cum Laude this semester with a 3.58 in Mechanical Engineering. Johnson, who will return for his final year of eligibility in the fall, was also a Cum Laude graduate with a 3.59 in Criminal Justice at the Spring Commencement. Wright has a 3.28 in Business Entrepreneurship while Pavlou carries a 3.57 in Health and Exercise Science.
This group was among 92 wrestlers from across the country to earn Academic All-NWCA. Johnson McCroskey and Wright made up three of the 83 who also competed at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Only American (6), Cornell (5) and Oklahoma (5) had more individuals honored than the Mocs.
