UTC began the morning with three duos vying for doubles titles. Senior Jenna Nurik (Roswell, Ga.) and sophomore Kaylene Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) came into the weekend ranked No. 58 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). They lived up to their billing by winning the No. 1 Flight with an 8-6 victory over Kennesaw State's Apostu & Stein.
Freshmen Katie Polk (Woodstock, Ga.) and Kelsey Coots (Huntsville, Ala.) teamed up to win the No. 3 Flight. They defeated Lowther and Simon from UAB 8-4 in today's finals. Junior Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) and freshman Kayla Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) lost their finals match in the No. 2 draw to Samford's Lewis and Lochner 8-6.
"It was a good weekend for the Lady Mocs," stated head coach Jeff Clark. "We start off strong with wins in two of the three doubles finals and carried that momentum through the rest of the day."
Two freshmen, Polk and Jones, took home the two singles trophies for UTC. Polk defeated teammate Coots in a hard fought final in the No. 4 draw. Polk won in three sets (3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4). Jones took home the No. 5 draw with a quick (6-2, 6-1) win over Jacksonville State's Kerindi.
Nurik defeated Chadwell in the third place match of the top draw (7-6 (6), 6-3) while Mulyadi also posted a third place showing at No. 3. Flynn finished fourth in the No. 2 Flight while Pecovski and fellow freshman Alison Storie (Johnson City, Tenn.) finished fifth in Flight 5 and 6, respectively.
The Lady Mocs will have next weekend off before continuing fall play at the Duckworth Classic. Action takes place Oct. 12-14 in Clemson, S.C.
