Volleyball Drops Three-Set Match to Cougars

The Chattanooga Mocs (8-14, 2-5 SoCon) volleyball team was unable to cage the College of Charleston (15-6, 7-1), dropping a three-set match (25-17, 25-15, 25-19) to the Cougars in Charleston, S.C., Saturday evening.

The Mocs were held to a .097 hitting percentage while the College of Charleston hit .333 for the match. Senior Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) finished with a team-high 9 kills while sophomore Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) was 7-17 with a .235 hitting percentage.

Junior Bridget Camacho collected 22 assists, and senior Paula Passmore led the UTC defense with 18 digs. Sophomore Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) each contributed on defense with 11 digs. Teter stood tall at the net with two solo blocks and sophomore Kasey Talley (Boiling Springs, S.C.) had two block assists.

Chattanooga led the first set on three occasions, but their one-point leads faded as the Cougars began to pull away 18-points deep into the match. A 7-7 game early, Charleston poured on an 8-3 run to take over the set. The Cougars marched to a 25-17 win with UTC threatening late.

Chattanooga was held to a match-worst .037 hitting percentage in the second frame while Charleston hit a match-best .375. Despite the poor hitting percentage, the Mocs held the Cougars within two points, 13-11, until Charleston exploded for seven straight points. The 8-1 run put the Cougars up 21-13, scoring four of the set's last seven points to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Charleston claimed the match with the third stanza, picking up a 25-19 en route to downing UTC. Chattanooga jumped on the Cougars early with a 5-3 advantage, but Charleston slowly whittled away at the lead (5-4, 8-7, 10-9) eventually taking an 11-10 advantage and keeping the pedal down. The Mocs would pull within one point of tying the set, 15-14, but Charleston cruised to the win with a 10-5 run.

The Mocs wrap up their road trip tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. matchup with The Citadel. The match can be followed online with live video and live stats provided by the Bulldogs.
