Mocs Put Three on All-SoCon Team

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team put three members on the All-Southern Conference squad, the league office announced today.  Senior Manuel Barroetavena grabbed first-team honors while seniors Ankit Chopra and Roberto Vieira made the second team in doubles.

Barroetavena, a two-year starter from Buenos Aires, Argentina, had the rare feat of making the first team from the No. 2 position.  He went 22-9, 15-4 in the spring dual season and 8-2 in SoCon matches.  He was 13-3 while playing No. 2 or No. 3, and 2-1 when stepping into the top spot.

“In my 12 years of coaching, this only the second time I can remember someone making the first team who did not play No. 1,” said head coach Carlos Garcia.  “It just goes to show how well Manny played throughout the spring and the impact he had on our team.”

Chopra (Chandigrah, India) and Vieira (Bedfordview, South Africa) were also a surprise addition to the All-SoCon squad.  They were paired together late in the season and posted a 3-3 record in the spring.  However, they won three of their last four matches, all against tough competition in league play.

“Getting Ankit and Roberto on the All-SoCon team was huge,” stated Garcia.  “It is a bit of a surprise since they didn’t play together very long, but it is still a very deserving honor based on how they performed down the stretch.”

Barroetavena was also impressive in doubles and had a chance for postseason honors with teammate and fellow senior Jackson Tresnan (Apopka, Fla.).  They were 13-3 in spring matches and 9-1 in SoCon play.  They went 8-1 in their usual No. 3 position.

The Mocs posted an 11-8 overall record and 6-4 in league action.  UTC has clinched back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2007 and 2008.  Chattanooga has also recorded its first winning record in league play since 2007.

UTC grabbed a first-round bye at the SoCon Tournament with a fifth place finish in the league standings.  The Mocs face UNCG in the second round on Friday, April 20, at 9:00 a.m. in Elon, N.C.  A link for live scoring will be available on the men’s tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.
