GoMocs.com is providing a weekly summer series highlighting the Chattanooga Mocs basketball program. This consists of a brief feature below and the attached highlight video from the 2012-13 season. The final spotlight shines on departed senior Dontay Hampton.
Dontay began his Chattanooga career in 2008-09 as a walk-on out of Chattanooga Arts & Sciences. He redshirted that year as a rail-thin guard, but blossomed in the weight room and on the court to become a go-to performer as a fifth-year senior.
His year started and ended with the disappointment of a knee injury. It started over the summer as surgery and rehab kept him out until the calendar turned to 2013. He came back to the squad on January 10 at The Citadel and made an immediate impact.
Two games later, he broke his dominant hand (right) on a late foul in the overtime win over Appalachian State. He played through the injury only to have his knee problems return and end his season at Elon the following week.
Here are a few of Hampton’s 2012-13 highlights:
>Played in five games, starting one, averaging 9.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per contest. He made 50 percent of his three-point attempts (10-20).
>Came off the bench to score 11 points in his first game of the season at The Citadel. He added five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 16 minutes of playing time keying a 10-point come-from-behind win in the second half.
>For the second consecutive year, Hampton capped an amazing comeback win over Appalachian State. In 2011-12, his layup with less than a second remaining was the game winner. This past season, his career-high 22-point effort led a return from a 19-point deficit with 6:36 left in the game. Dontay hit a three-pointer from NBA range with 19 seconds to play to tie the game and send it into overtime.
>Showed his toughness after a broken hand in the win over Appalachian State by coming back two nights later playing 23 minutes against Western Carolina.
>Shot 86.7 percent from the free throw line (13-15). His lone two missed free throws came immediately after breaking his hand against App State.
