DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team was unable to overcome the Davidson Wildcats with a 3-1 loss on Sunday afternoon despite a double-double from sophomore Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) and 10 kills for freshman Kendall Sexton (Orlando, Fla.).
“Davidson just played well and was hungrier than us,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “They disrupted our offense with their game plan and we didn’t respond with enough urgency.”
A long fight in the first set, the Wildcats took the first set 27-25 over the Mocs. Chattanooga was held to just four back-to-back point rallies despite a tight extra-point set, but Davidson overpowered the Mocs 25-15 in the second set.
UTC topped the Wildcats 25-14 in the third set that seemed to take a 180 degree spin from the second frame. The Mocs totaled 15 kills for a match-high en route to the win, shortening the Davidson lead to 2-1 after the intermission.
Despite the won over the Wildcats in the third, Davidson put the match away 3-1 in the fourth set with another 25-15 victory. The win puts the Wildcats at 12-8 on the season and 3-3 in the Southern Conference while Chattanooga falls to 3-18, 2-4 in the SoCon.
“We have to better understand that the way our conference is this year that anyone can beat anyone,” Filar said. “We have to come back next week and improve before this coming weekend at home.”
The Mocs return to action next weekend at Maclellan Gym as Chattanooga hosts UNCG and Elon.
