NORMAN, Okla. --- The football team opens the 2008 season playing perhaps the most difficult matchup in its recent history when it takes on No. 4-ranked Oklahoma Saturday.

Kickoff at the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on the Norman, Okla., campus is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.

Oklahoma has gone 11-3 each of the last two years and won back-to-back Big 12 Conference Championships.  The Sooners, coached by Bob Stoops, are picked by some to play for the Bowl Championship Series National Championship this season.

“They are certainly one of the most talented teams in the nation if not the most talented team,” UTC Head Coach Rodney Allison said.  “I want our guys to compete.  I don’t want them to be intimidated and I don’t want them to flinch.  If we are able to play our game for a few quarters, who knows what could happen.”

The Sooners are the highest-ranked upper-division team the Mocs have played since facing No. 3-ranked Tennessee in 1951.

Several unfortunate preseason injuries to key Mocs’ starters will alter Allison’s strategies a bit.  Projected starting center Brian Heflin, Preseason All-Southern Conference running back Bryan Fitzgerald and speedy sophomore cornerback Buster Skrine are all unavailable for the game because of injuries.

Junior college transfer Jare Gault is expected to start at quarterback for Chattanooga in his first career game for the Mocs.  But junior Tony Pastore is also expected to get some significant playing time at signal caller during the game.

“Jare has the ability to make plays when the protection breaks down,” Allison said.  “I really believe that is one of his strong suits. One word I have used to describe him is

“gunslinger," and I think he is that style of player. He plays a lot like Brett Favre. You may get a bad play every now and then, but I think you will get a lot of good plays because of that style.

“Tony has worked very hard this spring and summer, and he has put himself in position to help this team on the offensive end.  He will get a chance too.”

Sooner quarterback Sam Bradford, now just a sophomore, set an NCAA record last year with 36 touchdown passes as a freshman.  He is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the nation entering the season after throwing for 3,121 yards and completing 70 percent of his passes.

The Mocs and a travel party totaling 150 flew from Chattanooga to Oklahoma City Friday afternoon via charter plane and held a walk-through at OU’s stadium in the evening.

The game will be broadcast on WGOW Radio 102.3 FM in the Chattanooga area with the pregame show beginning at 6 p.m. CT.

The game will also be televised on a pay-per-view basis by Fox Sports Net.  Chattanooga Comcast Cable subscribers can purchase the game broadcast for $29.95 and view the game on channel 726.

DirecTV subscribers can watch the game on satellite channel 695, and Dish Network subscribers will receive the game on channel 462.
