CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Chattanooga Mocs, ranked No. 12 in the Golfweek preseason rankings, cruised to the 2008 Aldila Scenic City Invitational at Council Fire Golf Club winning by 14 shots carding a record final round of 266, 22-under par.  Augusta State claimed second place with a sparkling round of its own for the final 18, 275 (-13), in the event co-hosted by Chattanooga and Middle Tennessee.

 

Southeastern Louisiana’s Matt Carvell followed up his opening round 60 (-12) with rounds of 70 and 68 to walk away with medalist honors.  His three-day total of 198 (-18) is also a tournament record.

 

Chattanooga junior Fredrik Qvicker (pronounced Quicker) stole the final round headlines with a school record 62, 10-under par.  Qvicker shot a three-round total of 208 (-8) to finish seventh.  He is one of five Mocs to finish in the top 10, including individuals.

 

Mocs senior Ben Rickett completed three rounds in the 60’s (69-68-68) shooting 205 (-11) to tie for second with Wichita State’s Dustin Garza (69-69-67) and Western Carolina’s Andres Cuenca (68-69-68).  Garza led the Shockers to a third-place finish at 851.

 

Two other Chattanooga team counters finished in the top 10 as freshman Stephan Jaeger shot a final-round 65 (-7) to finish his first collegiate tournament in fifth place at 206 (-10).  Two-time SoCon Player of the Year Jonathan Hodge finished tied for 10th at six-under par 210.  Derek Rende finished tied for 25th with a two-under par 214.  For the tourney, the Mocs had 12 par or better rounds out of 15.

 

Chattanooga led by five shots after the suspended round two finished up in the morning.  The Mocs followed a 10-under par first round with a 13-under par 275.  Augusta State trailed in second with identical rounds of 279 to stand at 558 (-18) and Wichita State was in third at 567 (-9).

 

The Mocs received good final rounds from the four individuals playing in the tourney.  Tripp Harris posted an eight-under 64 followed by Hudson Keener (66), Eric Forsman (69) and J.T. Clendenin (72).  Keener had a fabulous tournament shooting 210 (-6) with rounds of 71, 73 and 66 finishing tied for 10th.

 

Chattanooga is back in action the Friday, Sept. 12, at the Carpet Capital Classic at the Farm in Dalton, Ga.  The three-day event covers 54 holes and is one of the top collegiate events in the country.
