Wrestling Heads to Indiana Duals for Five Matches

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team continues action at the Indiana Duals in Bloomington, Ind. this weekend.  The Mocs will compete in a round-robin of five dual meets against host Indiana, Cumberland, Liberty, Northern Illinois and South Dakota State. 

Action begins at 9:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) on Saturday, Nov. 28, from University Gym on IU's campus.  A full schedule is below:

The Mocs will travel with 18 wrestlers for the event, allowing them the ability to shuffle their lineups throughout the day.  UTC's breakdown by weight class is listed below with an * denoting the probable starters.

Indiana comes into the event ranked No. 11 in  the IntermatWrestle.com Top-25.  The Hoosiers are 1-0 in dual meets on the year.  Three-time All-American and 2008 National Champion Angel Escobedo is tops on the team with his No. 2 ranking at 125 pounds. Additional Hoosiers present in the rankings include: Nate Everhart (11th, 285 lbs.), Kurt Kinser (12th, 157 lbs.), Paul Young (13th, 165 lbs.) and Trevor Perry (17th, 174 lbs.).  The Mocs are 0-4 all-time against Indiana.  Their last match resulted in a 29-11 loss in 2006. 

This will be Northern Illinois' first dual meet action of the season.  They are led by junior Tristen DeShazer who is ranked No. 20 in the nation at 133.  UTC is 1-2 against the Huskies all-time, including a 28-12 win at the Boilermaker Challenge last season. 

South Dakota State is 0-1 on the year with a loss at No. 2 Iowa State.  The Jacks are led by senior Tyler Sorenson who is No. 8 in the nation at 197.  This will be the first meeting between UTC and SDSU. 

Chattanooga is also taking on Liberty and Cumberland in the event.  The Mocs are facing the Flames for the first time and will be matching up against Cumberland for the ninth time.  UTC is 6-2 against Cumberland, including a 34-13 win last season. 

MOCS IN THE RANKINGS
Chattanooga has a pair of Mocs ranked this week in the IntermatWrestle.com rankings.  Senior Cody Cleveland is No. 10 at 141 after a 5-0 start.  He has three pins and a 11-6 decision against No. 7 Chris Diaz (VT) early this season.  Freshman Jake Young is No. 19 in the 174 rankings.  He won the Hokie Open in his first tournament of the season.  His only two losses have come by two points or less.  He dropped a 3-1 decision in the final seconds against No. 1 Mike Miller of Central Michigan in his last match. 

KNOX TAKES WOLFPACK OPEN TITLE
Senior Joey Knox posted a 4-0 record and won the Wolfpack Open's 157-pound class on Nov. 21.  He only allowed one point in his four wins in the open tournament.   

YOUNG WINS HOKIE OPEN IN COLLEGIATE DEBUT
Freshman Jake Young had an impressive start to his collegiate career, winning the 174 class at the 2009 Hokie Open.  The Ooltewah, Tenn., native posted a 6-1 record in his first weekend of college wrestling. 

MOCS PICKED TO WIN SIXTH STRAIGHT SOCON
The UTC wrestling team has been predicted to win the 2010 Southern Conference Wrestling championship, in voting by the league's head coaches.  The Mocs, who carry a 25-match unbeaten streak in league dual matches into the season, have won the past five SoCon regular season and tournament championships. Under the direction of first-year head coach Heath Eslinger, UTC picked up four of the six first-place votes in the balloting. 

FOUR MOCS ON THE PRESEASON ALL-SOCON TEAM
A two-time Outstanding Wrestler at the SoCon Tournament, senior Cody Cleveland was honored as the top wrestler at 141 pounds, and he was joined by teammates sophomore  Demetrius Johnson (125), senior Joey Knox (157) and sophomore Jason McCroskey (184).

TWO MOCS RANKED IN THE PRESEASON
Senior Cody Cleveland enters the season ranked No. 20 at 141 while fellow senior Joey Knox is No. 16 at 157 according to InterMatWrestle.com.
