This contest was originally scheduled as a road trip to Jacksonville, Ala., but was moved Chattanooga last week. It was also supposed to take place on Wednesday, March 29, but at 70% chance of rain in the forecast persuaded the coaches to move it back a day. This will be a double-header with both women's teams also taking the court.
Chattanooga is off to its best start since the 2008 season with a 7-2 overall record. The Mocs have won five straight and are just a another victory away from tying last year's total.
Junior Jackson Tresnan (Apopka, Fla.) leads the team with an 8-1 singles mark, all in spring action. He is 6-0 at the No. 5 position and has won eight-straight. Fellow junior Roberto Vieira (Bedfordview, South Africa) is 10-7 overall and holds down the No. 1 slot where he is 6-3. His 10 singles wins are the most on the team.
Junior Chris Smith (Johnson City, Tenn.) is No. 2 in the lineup where he is 7-1, including five consecutive wins. Junior Ankit Chopra (Chandigrah, India) is 4-3 at No. 3 while fellow junior Manuel Barroetavena (Buenos Aires, Argentina) is 4-2 since entering the lineup at No. 4. Freshman Pavels Grigorjevs (Riga, Latvia) is solidifying his role at No. 6 where he is 3-2 this spring.
Head Coach Carlos Garcia is still moving pieces around in the doubles lineup, but Chopra and Smith have won two in a row at No. 1. UTC swept the doubles in its last match against Kennesaw State with Vieira and Barroetavena at No. 2 and Grigorjevs and Tresnan at No. 3.
The Gamecocks are 2-6 with wins over Alabama State and North Alabama. Junior Igor Santos leads the team with a 5-0 mark at No. 2. UTC defeated the Gamecocks 5-2 in last year's match at the UTC Tennis Courts.
The Mocs will take nine days off before opening Southern Conference action at Elon on March 10. The next home match is set for Thursday, March 15 against Georgia Southern at the UTC Tennis Courts.
