Smith led the Southern Conference last season in six categories including scoring, goals and game-winning goals, earning her a spot on the league's all-conference second team. The left-footed striker scored a school-record 37 points in 2011 and tied the single season mark for goals with 16.
She was ranked sixth in the nation for goals per game with 0.89 and was 11th in the NCAA for points per game averaging 2.06. Smith was 14th among all Division I players for total goals and 27th for totals points. She is currently third in three categories on the UTC all-time list with 74 points, 30 goals and 14 assists.
As a freshman, Smith earned a spot on the All-Freshman team. According to CollegeSoccer360.com, she was ranked seventh nationally among all freshmen for scoring with 35 points and eighth with 11 goals. She led the league in seven categories despite playing a shortened 16-game slate.
The Lady Mocs, coming off a 6-10-2 overall mark and a 1-9-1 SoCon performance, were picked to finish 12th in the standings this season by the conference coaches.
Samford, the 2011 conference champion, was selected to repeat this season receiving 10 of 12 votes. The College of Charleston picked up one vote and placed second with 106 points, 14 behind the Bulldogs. Furman snared the other first place vote and was third in the tally with 97 points. UNCG was picked fourth (88) followed by Davidson (80) in fifth.
Samford, Furman and The Citadel each placed two players on the Preseason list. The Paladins' Martha Hall, 2008 SoCon Freshman of the Year, and defender Ali Simpson were each named to the list. Samford's Michelle Moll and Sabbath McKeirnan-Allen were each named to the list as were The Citadel's Vanessa Aponte and Mariana Garcia, 2010 SoCon Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
College of Charleston Sarah Schaidle was named to the team along with Davidson's Becca Fisher, the 2011 SoCon Freshman of the Year. UNCG's Cat Barnekow earned a spot on the team at defender while Elon's Kate Murphy picked up the votes at keeper.
Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team or players in the balloting.
The 2012 regular season begins on Friday, Aug. 17 at home as the Mocs host Tennessee Temple at 7 p.m. Admission to all Chattanooga home games is FREE. The 2012 SoCon Women's Soccer Championship will feature the top eight teams in the final regular-season standings with the final four facing off in Birmingham, Ala., on Nov. 2 and 4.
