Lady Mocs Open SoCon Tournament vs. Western Carolina

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team opens the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament in Elon, N.C., against Western Carolina on Thursday, April 18.  The Lady Mocs finished the regular season with a 17-4 overall record and 6-4 mark in league play.

Chattanooga is seeded sixth in the tournament and faces the No. 11 seed Catamounts (1-15, 0-10 SoCon).  Match time is set for 1:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) at the Burlington Tennis Center and a link for live scoring is available on the women’s tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.

UTC scored a 7-0 win over WCU in Chattanooga earlier in the season.  The Lady Mocs won all 10 matches in that sweep.  UTC is 22-0 all-time against Western Carolina.  A victory against WCU would give the Lady Mocs their most wins in a season since going 23-1 in 1991.

A win on Thursday would also set up a second round match against third-seeded Furman (13-8, 8-2 SoCon).  UTC battled the Paladins in a seven-hour match on March 24 in Chattanooga before falling 4-3.  That bout featured eighth tiebreakers and some gritty performances on both sides of the net.

UTC has lost 22 straight matches against Furman.  Chattanooga's last win in the series was a 4-3 victory on April 5, 1997, in Greenville, and each of the last two losses were 4-3.

The Lady Mocs had three individuals named to the All-SoCon teams earlier this week.  Senior Jenna Nurik (Roswell, Ga.) led the way with her first team selection.  She has a 21-10 overall record and is 16-4 in spring action.  She played all but one of her dual matches at No. 1 and went 6-4 in the SoCon.  Nurik is the first in program history to be named All-SoCon all four years of her career.

Freshman Kelsey Coots (Huntsville, Ala.) was a second-team All-SoCon pick and a member of the SoCon All-Freshman team.  She posted a 22-8 overall singles record and went 14-5 in dual matches  She was also solid in doubles, going 8-0 with junior Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) over the last month.

Freshman Kayla Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) leads the team with a 29-5 singles record.  She is 18-3 in dual matches and 7-3 in league play.  She went 15-2 in her primary spot at No. 3.

The Lady Mocs have won five SoCon Tournaments in school history (1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1990), tied with the College of Charleston for the second-most in league history.  Furman has won the most titles with 16.  Georgia Southern has two while Marshall won in 1997.
