CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete this weekend in the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Georgia Southern.
This is the 89th annual Outdoor Track and Field Championship for the men and the 27th for the women. Events will begin Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with the men’s decathlon followed by the women’s heptathlon events at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude with the awards ceremony at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
Junior Nathan Wanuch (Mississauga, Ontario) led the Mocs this spring snaring first in the 3000m Steeplechase at the season-opening USF Bulls Invitational. He followed that up with a top place finish in the 5000 meter at the Yellow Jacket Invitational then posted a second-place finish at the Boston-Moon Classic in the 1500 meter run.
Sophomore Amanda Sumner (Bristol, Conn.) earned all-conference last season in the 1500 meter run. This spring she ran the 1500m at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, finishing fourth and ran the 800 meter in the USF Bulls Invitational, Beynon Sports Catamount Classic where she posted a season-best time, and the Boston-Moon Classic.
Seniors Morgan Buchanan and Blake Olson will be running in their final SoCon Championships this year but will continue on together after graduation as a couple following their engagement earlier this week.
Buchanan concentrated this summer on the distance races competing in the 5000 meter in three separate meets and posting a season-high time at the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational and winning the event at the Boston-Moon Classic. Olson, who placed seventh at last year’s league championships in the 400m hurdles ran the event through all four meets this spring with a top time of 54.75 at the Boston-Moon Classic.
Newcomers will be the feature of the championships for the Mocs with more than half the roster filled with rookies. Freshman Marquis Carter ran the 400m and the 800m this spring while Zack Darby’s events were a bit more diverse as he ran the 800m, the 1500m and the 3000m Steeplechase.
Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) will run the middle distances as well as a relay as will Matthew Marshall (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) who concentrated on the 800m and 1500m races this year. Geoff Nelson will run the shorter races having competed in the 400 meter at all four meets. He posted a season-best time of 49.56 at the Boston-Moon Classic, placing third.
Sophomore Keeley Stewart (Winchester, Tenn.) stuck to the 1500m while junior Jessica Philpott (Manchester, Tenn.) ran both the 800m and 1500m events this season.
