CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team (26-21, 10-8 SoCon) hosts Samford (13-31, 5-13 SoCon) this weekend at Frost Stadium for a three-game series to wrap up the 2013 home schedule. Saturday’s double-header begins at 1 p.m. and will end the series Sunday with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
Sunday will serve as Senior Day for the Lady Mocs as the softball program recognizes seniors Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.), Ninjja Suetsugu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Kasey Tydingco (Fairfield, Calif.) prior to the 2 p.m. first pitch.
"It's an exciting weekend for us," Head Coach Frank Reed said. "It's the last homestand of the season. It is a weekend we get to honor the seniors and play for that last win at home. They have given so much to this program and I hope we have a great crowd out to show those three student-athletes how much they are appreciated."
Reed and the Lady Mocs enter Senior Weekend coming off a series win over UNCG. Tydingco continues to lead the team with a .379 average, five home runs and 31 RBI. Poteat follows up with a team-best 55 hits and 75 total bases. The second baseman has also swiped 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
Freshman Sam Taylor (Chickamauga, Ga.) continues to stay hot at the plate, extending her hitting streak to 13 games, and collecting two multi-hit games against UNCG last weekend. Since beginning her steak, Taylor has raised her average by .100 and recorded six multi-hit games – including two three-hit games.
Sophomore Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) continues to pace the pitching with a 16-9 record and maintains a 3.35 ERA as the ace of the staff. The sophomore has pitched over 171 innings and has also recorded two saves out of the pen. Freshmen Rachel Albritton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Kaisey Carson (Indianapolis, Ind.) provide support with 10 wins combined along with 45 combined appearances. Carson picked up two wins over the past weekend against Greensboro to improve to 4-8 during her first season in Chattanooga.
As for Samford, the offense is led by senior Alex Adams. The 2010 All-SoCon selection is batting .270 with a team-best 34 hits and 17 RBI. Meagan Dowdy follows closely behind with a .250 average and 32 hits. Freshman Callie Brister provides the power in the Samford lineup, crushing five home runs and collecting a team-high seven doubles, leading the Bulldogs with 12 extra-base hits.
The Bulldogs’ pitching staff is led by sophomore righty Shelby Scott. The hurler was 2-1 in three starts against Elon last weekend and was named the Southern Conference’s Pitcher of the Week, tossing a one-hitter and no-hitter against the Phoenix just two days apart. It is the second no-hitter of the season for Samford as ace Mollie Hanson pitched the first on March 10 against Greensboro. Hanson records a 1.76 ERA and is a team-best 7-8 on the season.
