University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Kayla Jones won the 2013 Tennessee Valley Open Doubles Championship at Chattanooga’s Manker Patten Tennis Center over the weekend. Jones teamed with current Vanderbilt junior Marie Casares to beat the top two seeds in field on their way to the title.
"Kayla showed that she can play doubles at a high level this weekend,” stated UTC head coach Jeff Clark. “She and her partner beat some strong college players to get the title."
Jones and Casares started off the weekend with a (6-0, 6-1) win over Sarah Evans (Wofford) and Tarah Garner (Lee). They followed that up with a straight–set win over No. 2 seed Megan Kurey (Georgia Tech) and Allie Robbins (Ole Miss) (7-5, 6-1) in the semifinals.
Jones and Casares faced No. 1 seed Sydney Campbell and Frances Altick of Vanderbilt in the finals. After dropping the first set 6-2, Jones and Casares battled back to take the second set 6-2. A 10-point, super-tiebreaker decided the third set and the match, which Jones and Casares won 10-7.
Jones, a native of Memphis, Tenn., is coming off an outstanding freshman season where she led the team with a 31-5 singles record. She was also 19-9 in doubles action and named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team.
